As far as I know, back channeling and minimal responses are the same thing (or, at least, for VCE English Language, you can consider them to be the same thing).

Thank you!!
I have another question:

How do personal pronouns aid cohesion?? :) and also possesive pronouns?

Is it due to anaphora and cataphora??
Very confused atm :(

Thanks!

Yes minimal responses is also called listening noises or back-channeling. (We're learning this now in Year 11.) e.g. mmm, yeah - positive non-verbal noises

-indicate to the speaker that the audience is listening
-or audience approves of what the speaker is saying but do not want to interrupt

Hey,
I'm pretty sure that deixis IS a part of cohesion as it's mentioned under cohesion the study design.
"-Factors that contribute to a text’s cohesion: information flow including clefting, front focus and
end focus; anaphoric and cataphoric reference; DEICTICS; repetition; synonymy, antonymy and
hyponymy; collocation; ellipses; substitution; conjunctions and adverbials"

Are you allowed to do English Language 3/4 without doing 1/2? And if so, would you recommend it (to a person who only gets B+ to A average on sacs)?

Thanks!

Hiii~ :)
EngLang is a great subject, but its a lot of work! :)
I guess 1/2 was pretty useless for me , in terms of not having such a great teacher .So I learnt most of content that i needed this year. :)
And it depends on the type of sacs you've been having , like if its like short answer questions and essays, then having a B+ to A average is great! :)
Good luck! :)

I'm pretty certain that you can, especially seeing a lot of things learn in 1/2 does not apply to 3/4 (history of English and language acquisition come to mind). The thing with Eng Lang is that you should learn how to extract meaning from certain features/characteristics used within texts -- do that and you'll be golden.
If you really are going to pick up the subject without first completing 1/2, I highly suggest that you pay a lot of attention to your first two SACs which is when some basics such as metalanguage and subsystems will be learnt for you but revision for your classmates.

What is the difference between discourse makers and discourse particles?
Or are they simply the same thing?

Also if everyone from class 2013 give a shout out of what they are up to at school.
Thank you.
