'We'

Hey guys,
A question concerning the use of the word 'we'
When writing a context, text response or any essay for the matter, instead of using 'we' is there a substitute?
For example,
Through the actions of the characters of the novel, we are able to witness...
I feel as if the use of 'we' feels out of place, much like when you use 'I' in a context and text response.
Is it also fine to use 'we'?

I hope this makes sense, hhaah

Thanks!

It's fine in an expository essay. Not for the other sections though.

Use general terms like "the reader", "the audience", if you need a substitute for 'we'.

Good question actually. something thats been on my mind recently. You could say, 'the audience' or 'the reader' or even 'one'... Like 'one is lead to believe'

I used to think it was completely unacceptable, but then I was reading through the high scoring essay (Text Response, Hard Times) on the 2009 Assessment Report, and the student started off his/her paragraph with this sentence; 'Through this we are able to see the destructive and unempathetic nature ...'
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/exams/english/english_assessrep_09.pdf

So, it must be acceptable then, so long as it fits well, and is not overused. Otherwise VCAA wouldn't set that essay as an example for a high range piece, or at least the assessor would have commented on it. I think so anyway.

Edit: beaten by brenreezy. Sorry, didn't see that until I posted

Don't be sorry eclipse, you made a great post :)

To clarify the perhaps absolute nature of my post, of course, you can do anything. Nothing will mean you won't score a 10/10 so long as you hit all the criteria for a 10/10. It's just, there are some things you probably shouldn't do.
