Well, look... I know this probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but if you love it, you should do it. Even if the workload is horrible, it will seem small. Theatre Studies at times had a huge workload (pre-performance(s) and folio), but when it wasn't performance or folio time the workload was so small. It was certainly my least favourite class, and I would have traded it for something with a huge workload that I loved.
Also... you would expect almost all VCE subjects to be about "understanding the content and answering questions correctly", with the workload relative to the individual.
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

Depends what your definition of heavy workload is and how quickly you understand the concepts.

It actually isn't just about learning the text book, there are quite a few questions in eco which are based on current events so in that sense if you want the top exam marks you want to be following current economic events over the year.

Good thing about eco is that to get top marks you don't have to spam practice questions like some other subjects and a lot of the stuff is quite similar and it all ties together so you don't have to memorise much. So in that sense the current events you got to follow etc. are balanced out.

I definitely spend the most of my study time on eco but that is probably more to do with the fact my other subjects are all 1/2's so naturally I focus on eco.

If you understand 1/2 quite well you would most likely be fine with 3/4.

The fact that you love the subject is a reason to do it, regardless of what the workload is. Eco is by far my favourite subject and although it can be pretty annoying at times the enjoyment I get from the subject is what keeps me going and encourages me to learn, so just that factor alone makes it worth it.

I don't think the workload is heavy, just make sure you learn the key concepts.
You'll find out that all of the key concepts interlink.

If you pick it up as a 3/4 without 1/2 (and have little to no knowledge about the economy and/or current events) then yes, it is a heavy subject. You either understand the concepts or you do not.

The thing is, if you put in enough effort to understand the concepts, then it is definitely not a heavy workload. You don't have to do endless practice questions and exams. There aren't that many definitions you have to memorise.

The "heavy workload" will depend on how quickly you can grasp the key concepts.

Economics, as everyone has already said is about conceptual learning, but they are not necessarily the easiest concepts to grasp at first, and you do need to put a lot of time into understanding them inside out. After this, it just becomes a matter of familiarizing yourself with current economic events and happenings in order to apply this understanding.

So it can be very heavy at times, but that said, it was my favourite subject, and understanding how the theory applies to the real world is actually very rewarding :)
