What if my UMAT wasn't "great"?

CHIN-UP!

The UMAT is a BRUTAL exam, one of the worst exams I have personally sat (up there with the 2 VCE physics exams I sat :P). It is unpredictable and does not reflect your ability to score well in VCE and nor is it the end of your dream to study medicine or dentistry.

There are many unis that don't use the UMAT, and let's be honest, a med degree is the same everywhere you go.
- JCU MBBS (ATARs above 97 usually + written app + interview)
- Griffith MBBS (99.75+ ATAR)
- ANU MBBS/PhB (99+ ATAR)

Also, Monash has changed the way they give interviews! So if you have high 80s%ile you can STILL be in with a chance! So keep going and smash that ATAR to make that spot yours, you can do it!

Furthermore, even if those opportunities don't go your way, there is graduate entry. Unis such as UoM are at your mercy here, and uni and the GAMSAT is a totally different ballgame to the VCE and UMAT.

So keep your chin up, have some faith, and realise that UMAT is just another stupid number you collect during your yr12 and don't let it define you or your aspirations.

I agree wholeheartedly with the unpredictability of the UMAT. In all honesty, I think it's more dependent on randomness and luck than most other exams you will sit.

But seriously, to all med-hopefuls, don't lose hope. It's easy to lose motivation at this stage. But if you work hard and focus on smashing that ATAR then you do stand a fair chance. You have to rebound from the disappointment as soon as possible, as hard as it is.
2012 ATAR: 99.20
2013-2015: Bachelor of Biomedicine (Microbiology/Immunology: Infections and Immunity) at The University of Melbourne
2016-2019: Doctor of Medicine (MD4) at The University of Melbourne

JCU sounds promising, does anyone here go there? The names sounds a little odd, but I'm willing to forego first impressions seeming my Monash MBBS dream shattered 3 hours ago  :'(

Unless you have a bunch of courses that you can't fit in on your preference list, I wouldn't remove it. Honestly, you never know what could happen - you may get a killer ATAR and be in the running for med again - so I really wouldn't remove the opportunity. :)
