That's a little vague; I dunno whether you're looking at something analytical or responding to a statement or whatever else, because of course they all work a little differently.

If you're looking at simply reinforcing yourself and your statements then there's nothing better than getting your metalanguage down pat. I've noted on a few SACs this year where my style of writing's been clear and fluent and my ideas are pretty obvious, but it lacks when it comes to actually supporting these sufficiently, so it's marked down as a result.

I try just to incorporate the 'this is what it is, this is what it does and why' style of approach which is quite simple, but as long as you keep backing this up and expressing this with the relevant metalanguage then your messages become clearer and your essays appear more sophisticated (because, well, they are). At least this seems apparent in the top-scoring EL essays I've read around - I'm not starring myself, either.

It's worth trying a practice piece or two just trying to nail these components down and seeing how it works for you. I know I'll need to...

Does anyone know of any good strategies or examples of how to tackle a discourse analysis?

Did anyone find that after a while, their essays have started to sound the same? Also, analytical; woah, so much to write, so little time and brain capacity...
If you don't know the answer to a question, chances are it has something to do with changing the surface area to volume ratio or resonance.

How many words should we shoot for in Section B and Section C, and what is the recommended times to be spent on each section? (including Section A)

After a while? My essays have always sounded the same. After writing around 10 essays in the holidays for my teacher, I found that I really couldn't write on any English Language topic again without repeating myself. And yet I still can't write essays at all -.-

Words? I'd say 8-900 to be safe.
The times I'm aiming for are 25, 45, 45, 5 minutes spare time in case something goes wrong.

I'm pretty sure I wrote a lot less than 900 words for my Englang essay :P I think 600-800 words would suffice.

Meh, it's anyone's guess. However, I'll bet my house, wife and car that there will be a political quote / cartoon in the stimulus material

Do you even have a house, wife and car to bet? :P

In all seriousness, I'm hoping for a doublespeak essay, although given the corporate language topic last year, I won't have that luck I think.
There definitely will be something related to identity. PC language would be quite interesting, given what's happened during the year.
