Why are some people bitter?

Why?
I don't understand this. Especially when I live with a person who is always cynical and extremist in their views, it takes a toll on me. I mean, I just don't understand why some people can just disregard other people's views and judge so strictly. I get that some people have had experiences and their own struggles, but what makes them qualified to judge others? What gives them more of a right to analyse other people and to pass harsh judgement? How can people be this bitter? I just don't get it.

It seems the more people you deal with the less respect you hold for humanity. On the bright side, it makes the good ones stick out, and you don't forget them :)

What a sad reality that is, but why have people become like this? I just don't get it. :(

They have been hurt by some (many) people or have seen many people get hurt, and believe that that's what humanity is.

It's frustrating dealing with people like that. They're just stubborn and blinded by their views and opinions that they can't tolerate others. People like that piss me off! They should just get over themselves and stop acting like the world revolves around them. They'll find it difficult to deal and mix with people if they continue to be bitter. I guess, you just have to show them that you don't care (which you really don't), there are better people out there in the world for us :)

Well, it's ONE way of dealing with it... And probably not the best way.

Why?
but what makes them qualified to judge others?

assumption that they are superior. They may have managed to convince themselves of their own superiority, however false this may be in reality.

For example, Regina George in Mean Girls thought she was perfect, with her platinum blonde hair etc. But the other actors in the movie knew of Regina's faults. Regina did not acknowledge these faults. Therefore, she believed she was superior, though she actually wasn't.

All in all, I suppose it's a case of the 'airhead syndrome'. Either we wait for the person to implode due to their own angst, or their big heads are deflated by others.

Yeah, it doesn't really compute with me. There are so many people that that I feel they get caught up with themselves so much, that it becomes a necessity to hold a faux-superiority in their mind. They no longer can even fathom the idea of social equality, that every expressive remark they make, they do it in a way of to tell themselves who they are arguing against is inferior. I don't blame the person at all, I blame the ego. The ego is like an out of control virus reproducing. It just spreads and spreads further and further out of control to the point where it is virtually impossible to cure.

Cynicism protects you from the world around you.
If there's something out there that wants to hurt you, you'll already hate it too much to care.
I know it's sad, but it's how a lot of people function these days.

Yeah. It's a sure-fire way of making sure you don't get hurt. You lose a lot of opportunity for trust though.

I've been close to adopting a cynical, Machiavellian view of the world to cope with my personal troubles. The only thing stopping me is that this part of my identity - being sincere and genuine in interactions - is something that resonates so strongly with me that I am not willing to give it up. Ever.

I think that sometimes it proves to be more harmful than it is good. Your personal problems may lie somewhere within relationships you currently have with people you currently care deeply for and bitterness often destroys relationships, especially close ones.
