For most of my subjects I've been unable to jot down the notes quick enough to the lecturer's pace, especially with first year biology. I ended up not going to half my lectures and just watching them on my laptop with control over speed, pausing and rewinding. I did get some very detailed notes this way but I'm starting to wonder if that's a viable study method as I enter second and third year - because it takes so much time to get through a single lecture, as long as 2 hours (longer in many cases).

Depends on the subject Starfish.. If it's one with no exam- keeping all your files on the computer is useful for assignments. If it's one with an exam I tend to use binders.
I just can't stand physical messes and I don't have the time to properly organise a folder haha, so I've stopped using binders. Again it just proves how subjective it is. Ultimately you have to do whatever works for you without driving you insane!

I don't tend to use binders as much now but they're useful for first year where you might need to seperate tutorials/ lecture notes/ prac notes (at least in science anyway) :P

I (obviously) have no idea how good this and this might actually be, but it looks like it's worth a shot?

these were really helpful, thanks  :)

I use Evernote for note taking. Works really well. Available on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android etc.

My basic strategy is to copy and paste the dot points and any key images/diagrams from the lecture slides prior to the lecture, and then basically just annotate and add to them as the lecture goes on.

If you want to fully get a grasp on the lecture, I find its easy just to make some of your own review questions that cover the key topics of the lecture. Then have a quick look over your notes and answer the questions in your own words. For me, explaining things in your own words is the best way to learn and retain information. If I just listen it's basically in one ear and out the other.

Then, come exam time, I go over all these and make some overarching subject review questions that essentially go section by section. I also might re-listen to some key lectures (provided they are recorded) and polish up my notes.

This can all get a bit laborious but since I've used this kind of method my results have been pretty solid and I tend to stay on top of things.

EDIT: Also, do people think it would be worth making a "General Jaffy advice/Q&A Thread" for stuff like this? i.e. personal strategies for study or general uni advice or getting around the campus etc.

Feel free to shoot me a PM pertaining to getting to M.Eng through the Environments course, or the Envs/Eng courses in general.

I made one a while ago - will resurrect it.

And yes Evernote is the greatest.
