Hi all

As I brainstorm answers for the 17 questions for my Phil exam, I can't help but think that I really do strongly dislike this unit. I didn't have high expectations for Phil and I chose it because it was interesting to me but I feel like some of the concepts are so wishy-washy, and is pretty much bullshitting and making shit up to me. And I don't think I can handle another semester of it and so I'm thinking of switching to Crim, which I have heard is pretty good and is also interesting.

Anyway, my questions are, for the sake of structure:

a) For anyone who has done Crim, what is it like? Is it really interesting? What do I need to know etc? I'm pretty sure that I needn't have done it in Sem 1.

b) When, if I choose to change units, do I do it and how? I know it's on WES but I'm scared of accidentally clicking a button and knowing that I'm no longer enrolled :P

c) I'm on a pathway so I'm thinking of transferring to Arts/Law next year since it's always been my goal/dream, so will transferring units have any effect on me? I'm pretty sure that they just count your WAM...

Thanks for your help and good luck for your exams :D

C) totally irrelevant.

B) do it once wes is opened. If it's open, so it now. Otherwise do it before the first week of semester 2. Whenever you want.

By phil do you mean philosophy?! I am in Year 12, and I am definitely interested in the Bachelor of Arts course and if I get a 25+ for Further possibly the Arts/Business Course. What philosophical models do you draw upon? Also is the Bachelor of Arts course enthralling?

Okay cool, checked it and it's opened. I got a receipt number with a list of my units so I think it's done. Awesome, Thanks Brenden?!

@Jono_CP
I love the units that I'm doing for Arts and Phil isn't at all that bad but I don't feel like it's something for me. It's a different way of thinking and while it's interesting the lecturers are fantastic, esp. Toby he's awesome, I just feel like the approach to phil is something that doesn't quite fit me. I mean you go in with your ideas of what it's like and for me, I guess maybe it was just different to the way I imagined it. Like, I wanted to do it because I'd always been interested in theories but I feel like we spend most of our times talking about why a theory is a good theory, why it's a bad theory, but not necessarily how it functions and affects people, which I was hoping we would cover. What I'm saying is that to me, it felt like rationality wasn't really rationality. I don't know if that makes sense but because of the theories that were covered, I guess I was looking for something concrete, like a conclusion that could be applied in all cases/dilemmas and it wasn't what I got. It's a good unit though if you have a philosopher's mind but it was definitely hard to adjust to, and the short answer questions to me were okay but difficult to do really well in.

Sem 1 we covered life, death and morality which is also the name of the course. We talked about whether it was permissible to kill somebody and the reasons for why it was permissible/justified. We also covered the meaning of killing of innocents, bystanders, aggressors, etc. So it's very interesting but like I said, if you don't think a certain way, you're not going to get it, but that's obviously just how I felt about it.

As for the rest of the units of my BA, I'm studying Linguistics which I absolutely love! Howie, the lecturer is hilarious and his powerpoints are so entertaining, and so his accent! Basically, Ling is my best and most loved unit, mostly because I never it would be interesting. The phonetics work is a bit hard but when you get used to it, it's not a problem.

I also do Psych which is very disorganised in terms of assessments and Moodle and Facebook always gets flooded with questions of what we're meant to be doing for the assignment as the criteria is very unclear, and often what was said in Moodle is not what what the facilitator expects you to do. But the lectures were fun and definitely intellectually stimulating, although some lecturers focused felt like they were advertising themselves and their PHds more than the actual topic. Some lecturers were a bit boring but all in all, it's a good unit. You just gotta go to the consulations and ask the facilitator what he/she wants you to do for the assessment because the answers in Moodle are often wrong.

And I do French. I have nothing to say about it because I love it. It's up there with Ling for me. :)

I'm doing the same unit and have exactly the same opinion of it, I feel they tried too hard to be an introductory unit rather than actually focusing on something.

2nd year Ethics is much more dense.

Yep, Jean, you're sweet and unenrolled in phil!

I'll disagree that you need to think a particular way. I think if someone pursues Philosphy they will learn to think in a particular way, which is half te value. Fair enough summation though, Jean. Symbolic logic gets hyper rational and technical if you ever want to dip your toe in :p

Sounds awesome Jono. Would definitely recommend Arts. I've tasted four degrees includingg Arts. Arts is by far my favourite

Completely irrelevent to your question Jean (and a bit late), but I've organised an exam brainstorming session at the Matheson basement tomrrow at 12 with about 7 other LDM students. (Possibly up to 13, but I doubt it)

We're gonna go through the questions so if you have any ideas/questions you should come along!

I didn't have high expectations for Phil and I chose it because it was interesting to me but I feel like some of the concepts are so wishy-washy, and is pretty much bullshitting and making shit up to me.

I think this is a matter of false expectations that have been dashed rather than something necessarily wrong with philosophy. Philosophy relies on rigorous logic and strong argumentation. Sure, you can respond any way you like to a point or question but for your response to be a good one, it has to have a lot of reasoning and thinking behind it (opposite of bullshit). It may take a little dusting to uncover this but it definitely lies beneath it all.

I was formerly in the Monash Kendo club, i joined with a friend. He went into it with certain expectations, he did not expect it to be rigorous, he thought it was just beating each-other with a sword. He expected it to exactly mirror traditional Japanese swordsmanship, it is closer to a sport. He expected to use a real sword eventually, it has no use in Kendo practice. He was extremely disappointed and left after a week or two. Why am i telling you this? To show everything you go into is all about expectation. I think you were expecting certain things of philosophy or came into it with preconceived notions it was "wishy-washy" and that is what is shining through,

I would be extremely weary of judging philosophy off one unit as well. It'd be like trying strawberry and deciding all icecream is like that. Anyway, i'm assuming i cant convince you (even though i've tried).

There's no use staying down with a burning ship, jump off if you really feel the need. I hear crim is good, using WES should be very intuitive, you won't accidentally unenroll from your course, there are multiple warnings. If you feel very scared, you may be able to get the people at the arts faculty to do it for you. They largely just look at WAM to the best of my knowledge, crim won't give you "bonus points" for instance.

I think I know who this is. Are you Jake? And I'm coming! I could be late though because I'm taking the bus.

Yes, I definitely agree with that and Phil has been fun. I liked writing the essay and some aspects of it aren't that terrible but with the focus on metaphysics in Sem 2, I don't think I'll be able to adjust to it. And yeah, you're probably right, even though I said that I didn't have high expectations, maybe I secretly did. And now that's why I'm feeling a bit lost and annoyed.

I didn't think it was "wishy-washy" to begin with but with all the unanswered questions, I just feel lost. But yeah, it was a good sem of phil and I don't regret doing it because I definitely did learn a lot of skills, but I don't think it's for me.

And yup, I'm enrolled in crim now ^^ so I didn't magically unenroll myself :P
