Biomed Double Major + Dip. Lang

Ahh! Getting consistent information from Student Advisors when it isn't "urgent" is so damn hard!!! I just realised all of the genius AN users could maybe, hopefully help out!

Next year I would (fingers crossed) like to do Biomed. I plan to major in Genetics (/the genetics major).
I also want to do a Diploma of Languages in Arabic. I understand this extends my degree to 4 years.

  • I will have 6 BREADTH subjects remaining. I will use them all for French. One requires 8 Units for a major.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO A DOUBLE MAJOR in GENETICS/FRENCH +  A DIP. LANG for Biomed?

  • If I take a Summer/Winter/September Intensive course, can I get extra elective slots/credit that towards a major?

Is there any other way I can get 2 extra breadth units into my degree?

Pls help. Thank you so much. Many +1s will be given for accurate advice!

This may be true. You can take the 6th breadth units from outside of biomed though...

You could probably do a double major in two things within the faculty though, right?

I don't know, maybe I'll minor in Latin. That could work (!)

1) You cannot double major (well you can, but on your academic transcript you get only 1)
2) If you use 6 breadth for French, that is fine but you will not get it credited as a major. The major must be in your discipline of studies. So, genetics would be credited on your degree as your major.
3) If you take a summer/winter/sept intensive course, you get the credit towards the subject (genetics subjects aren't offered for intensive as far as I know so you would not be able to credit them towards your major).
4) As far as I know, no. You do a minimum of 4 breadth, and maximum of 6. (I think for commerce studies this can go up to 8)?

If I did Summer intensives for French, that could potentially bring the units up to 8, right? Which "functionally" acts as if I had done a major, even though UoM only recognise one.

Do they identify minors on your degree?

How simultaneously interesting and annoying.

Purely hypothetically, is it misleading to employers to say you completed a French track major? I mean a Dip Lang will be challenging enough/as employable but it seems silly to not call it a major if it meets the time and work prerequisites.

You can only cross credit up to a maximum of four subjects. So while you may do all Arabic subjects in your 6 breadths, only four of those can count towards your Diploma award.

You can't do a major in French unless you're doing a Dip. Lang in French or a Bachelor of Arts. You could only use your 6 breadth subjects as French.
Except for rare cases, there is no way to get extra subjects into your degree. You'd have 300 points for your biomed degree and 100 for the diploma. Even if you do an intensive subject, that still takes up some of these credit points and just means you have less subjects to do later. The only way to take extra subjects is to take subjects outside of your degree through the CAP program https://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/courses/single_subject_studies.
You could say to employers that you studied French to an advanced level at university through breadth/use Valjean's suggestion. If you really wanted to, you could also take a test at the Alliance Francaise to prove you have a certain standard of French.
Hope that helped.

I think I want to do the JD afterward, and/or work in International Relations/Global Health for the UN so being able to demonstrate a formal capacity in a variety of languages, and not just Western ones, could be very beneficial.

Thank you for all of your responses. The Dip Lang will extend the Biomed degree to four years if I begin in my first year. I will probably use my breadth for French anyway, but obviously not for the purposes of a major.

The AN forum has been a greater help in a couple of hours than several student advisors and weeks trawling the UoM website for consistent info. Thanks
