2 English or 2 Maths Subjects?

So here's the problem, I can only do 5 subjects next year and I don't know whether it's better to do either two English sequences or two maths sequences. Basically I just have to decide which one subject to drop out of English, literature, methods and further. I am set on not dropping chemistry or legal, and by next year I will have finished biology 3/4. I have weighed up the pros and cons but am still undecided and would like a second opinion :) Here's my reasoning for each subject.

If I was to drop...

1) English - then I wouldn't have a backup for if I went badly in literature, which is important because it would automatically count in the top 4. But, I am pretty good at writing. Also should note I do not do 1/2 English this year, will that disadvantage me at all?

2) Literature - then I wouldn't have a backup for if I went badly in English, blahblahblah top 4. However, I am doing literature this year so I guess that's an advantage too.

3) Methods - then the workload/stress would be lessened. Problem is it's a prerequisite if I wanted to go to Melbourne Uni. But a study score of only 25 is needed to be considered. Maths is not my strong point, at the moment I don't put in much effort and get average marks but I'm planning (as of tomorrow!) to start doing regular nightly study.

4) Further - basically just a points grabber. I do enjoy maths, but just a little bit easier... when I actually understand what's going on. Also further is a maths backup for if I do badly in methods, I would still like to have a maths that I did alright in, because I enjoy it.

Any input would be appreciated, thank you! :D

Personal opinion, but I'd do two English subjects. I'm doing two this year (English and Lit) and whilst my Lit marks are a bit lower than English, Lit is definitely helping boost my English marks. It can be a lot of work at times with all the texts to read, but Lit is so interesting and it helps you in thinking more critically in English. You wouldn't be at a disadvantage with not having done 1/2 English. My brother picked up English 3/4 and hadn't done 1/2 and he ended up with a 49, so anything is definitely possible!  :D

Can we know how you're going for each of the subjects you mentioned above? I mean, if you're doing quite well in lit and quite enjoy it then i suggest you not take up english. Another english subject means a 3 hour exam and the two subjects are actually quite different. If methods is not your strong point (once again, need to see your scores), i suggest you keep further like you said because it can be a backup maths. Out of the small literature class at my school, only 1 or 2 students dropped english whereas the rest are doing english and literature. The two who dropped english genuinely enjoy literature and are getting good scores.

Ultimately it should come down to what you want to do in your VCE. It is a year of your life and regardless how much natural talent you might have for a particular area, a genuine intetest and passion for a subject will always reap greater results. Personally this year I am doing two maths, two science and the english that is compulsary. I've always been good at english but it's never seemed exciting to me. My results this year aren't bad for any subject but english would definately be a little lower than the rest.
In the end you have got to enjoy the final year of your schooling. You will only do this by doing subjects you truly love and want to keep doing more of (can't wait to do homework/study etc.)

Speaking from personal experience, two english subjects can be pretty heavy. I had both a lit sac and an english sac in the same week, and it was pretty darn stressful. In saying that though, I strongly believe that lit has helped me a lot in terms of analysis in english, so there are definitely benefits in doing both (even though one will definitely be my 10% subject because lit is hard, man).

For maths, a lot of people I know who are doing both further and methods (though they only picked up further this year, without doing 1/2) have found that further is trickier than they assumed, but since you're already doing it, you'll have some really great base knowledge. If you're feeling confident about both kinds of maths, then there's not reason to drop one, I suppose.

Those are just my thoughts.
