Hi folks,

I was just wondering if anyone was also majoring in Chemistry. I'm doing the medicinal chemistry specialization. Would be sweet to know some AN buddies and help each other out if there's questions about one another's subjects and topics, plus the oldies can help the newbies in first year etc.

So, is anyone doing Med Chem, Chem Systems, or Chemistry as their major?

My twin bro is doing Chemical Systems, 3rd year this year. He's username is Groudon or Kyogre, can't remember.

I'll probably be going down the Pharmacology/Medicinal Chemistry pathway.

Until then it's a relatively cozy first year life.

EDIT: What calculators are allowed in the subjects within the Medicinal Chemistry pathway? Looking at past exam papers they only specify "non-alphanumeric calculator". So am I right in assuming it can't contain the entire alphabet? What about it being programmable though?

Biochem major here, done up to third year chem. Taking a break before I start studying for my exam next week.

From memory, second year it's just a regular scientific calculator (not programmable,) third year it's a programmable calculator. You shouldn't need a programmable calculator though, and they don't enforce the rule in second year.
BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

Oh, and for those doing Chemical Systems, remember that Mechanical Systems is so much better  :P

I'm headed down the Medicinal Chemistry pathway, simply because I studied it all out of a desire to do medicine and doing 1st year biology subjects. It would be interesting to do the 3rd year "special topics in chemistry" subjects, but I guess I still can with leftover slots.

I'm hearing that Practical Chemistry 2 and Advanced Practical Chemistry are incredibly difficult subjects. Supposedly in third year practical chemistry, the products that you make are used in future experiments, so you can be screwed for a few weeks if you mess up one prac.

The 3rd year advanced topics subjects look great. I'm disappointed that I never got to take them.

Yeah, prac chem is a nasty subject. It's not so much a question of the pracs being difficult (although they aren't easy,) it's more the time management, with two pracs and lab reports a week. Quite a few people I knew had dropped back to three subjects and still found it quite demanding. It's probably the worst subject I've taken to date in terms of hours/time.

The third year prac is worse apparently - never did that, stuck to biochem.

So both subjects CHEM20020 and CHEM20019 are looking awesome.

Prac writeups are proving pretty hard to do, it's fairly good practise for researching how to do things, like statistics calculations if you've never really used them before.

P.S.

The Senior Chemistry Initative is meeting on next Tuesday in Union House... 2nd years + are encouraged to come... if people are interested I will look up where exactly it is in union house again and post back
