In terms of employment opportunities and recognition, which is better to undertake Radiography and Medical Imaging @ Monash University (92 ATAR) or Medical Radiations-Medical Imaging (Radiography) @ RMIT University (RC) ? Thanks.

Hey! Ultimately I'd imagine they're about the same in terms of graduate employability. I wouldn't be surprised if most people in either bachelor system go on to further postgrad study to boost their employability/knowledge anyway.

I don't know much (pretty much anything) about the RMIT course but Monash's BRadMedImag (Hons) is, according to several mates of mine doing it, pretty great. Plus, a lot of the teaching staff are from the Dept of Anatomy and Developmental Biology and they're by far the best and most organised teaching staff I've had at Monash.

With most accredited degrees (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, etc) people can be sure the degree meets a certain standard, so, which institution isn't of utmost importance (still plays a factor though). Ultimately, things like internships (and doing well, making contacts) and volunteer work (my mate in radio worked for St.Johns Ambulance etc) will probably be more important.

Whirlpool (http://www.whirlpool.net.au) has a lot about these kind of things, id encourage you to take a look over there. Sometimes they can be a bit negative though (about prospects etc) so just keep that in your mind.

Thanks guys. I would most likely undertake a post graduate course anyways,  but just in case :P

Could you be able to transfer from RMIT to Monash say after first year?

Yes you definitely can (assuming you have the requisite grades and prerequisites). However, keep in mind that a transfer is likely to be quite difficult in terms of timetable management as well as being bureaucratic to the extreme. You also may not be able to carry over specified credit (credit that gets you out of core units and course requirements) because Monash tends to be pretty adamant about students doing core units unless they are specifically prohibited by some other unit choices you've made.

tl;dr If you want to get into the Monash course then aim 100% for the Monash course (the same is the case for the RMIT counterpart). It is possible to transfer (unless I've not seen some rule somewhere staying otherwise) but it'll likely keep you in undergrad for quite a long time.

Thanks heaps for that. You're right, I should aim 100% for it and not try to bypass the hard path haha.

Also, there's nothing wrong with the RMIT degree. In fact, I'm pretty sure their program was accredited before Monash's was haha. I know of several people who graduated from the RMIT program and have been happily employed for a number of years :)

Fair enough! I just presumed that because Monash's course asked for a higher ATAR, that it was higher in demand meaning better employment opportunities.

While you're correct in stating that ATAR requirements for a course is (mainly) tied to the student demand, it's probably only higher at Monash due to students opting to go there because of "prestige", mates or other fairly arbitrary reasons. I'd imagine there isn't much daylight between Monash and RMIT's radio/med imaging courses :)

In my totally bullshit and unscientific view, ATAR is a self-reinforcing thing.

Think about it, a course needs 80 to get in, so, everyone looks at it and judging by the ATAR thinks its a good course, so, what do they do? They go and bump up/maintain the demand doing the same to the ATAR.

It's a similar reason why its so hard for universities like VU to get out of a glut (i guess there are concerns about quality/prestiege but i dont think its a horrible university).

Yeah without a doubt. Reputation and prestige plays a big role in peoples mind! (including me haha)
