Definitely not cheating for English Language

Hi, I'm new to atarnotes and need major assistance.

First thing I'd like to say is I'm struggling with English Language. I'm currently in year 11 and barely passing my SACs (50 - 60% marks).
I have an Argumentative Essay SAC coming up this week and the topic is, "The spread of English throughout the world is a mixed blessing - it has both positive and negative consequences. Discuss in terms of at least 3 subsystems".
I need some main topics (1 subsystem per body paragraph) and evidence to support it.

Also before I end this, I would like to ask, how do you become motivated to study and get better marks?
Thank you.

If I were to get this type of essay I would look at the following possible points:
- The globalisation of English has led to language death/loss (e.g. Aboriginal varieties have become extinct due to the colonisation of the British). This therefore leads to loss of cultural identity as well as loss of heritage. I'd recommend doing a Google search on Aboriginal language extinction and getting some good quotes or example (and also of recovery efforts) and doing a paragraph on this negative consequence of the spread of English.
- It has helped our world communicate more efficiency as English becomes a 'lingua franca'. Nations such as China now often teach English to students, and this could provide them with greater employment opportunities because of the ability to speak English. This could arguably be a positive influence. I would also do research on Google on this topic.
- The spread of English has led to the creation of creoles such as Singlish and Kriol. In particular, Singlish is a creole in Singapore and is often highly discouraged by the government. However, many of the Singaporeans believe that Singlish is a marker of national identity. This paragraph would discuss the positive and negative consequences.

I hope this helps!!

To get motivated, I would recommended reading more and having an open mind to the subject. I personally found it interesting when I studied and researched in my own time outside of class on topics such as language death, and then the more knowledge I absorbed, the better I became at the subject. Remember to get the highest mark possible, you need to do more than your teacher sets you and try your best to take a genuine interest in the subject.

Good luck! :)

Hi dmitridr,

Thank you for helping, I really appreciate it.
Just a question, can you tell me which subsystem the main topics belong to?
Also I need help of using metalanguage throughout the essay.

Thank you!

Hi there!

It would be difficult just to solely group one subsystem per paragraph, rather look at which subsystems have been affected in each paragraph.
In the last paragraph, you could analyse the syntactic and lexical differences of Singlish (there's 2 subsystems already).

Perhaps you could look at the phonology of Aboriginal languages? I am not too sure what your last subsystem could be!

I hope this helps
