Four Level 2 Science Subjects in one semester?
« on: December 04, 2014, 10:09:59 am »

Hi guys,
So I'm trying to get into the Vet fast track while keeping a couple of other majors open, just in case I don't get in, so I am looking at doing four science subjects next semester. What are your recommendations? Should I? Should I not? How manageable is it?

This is what I'm currently thinking subject wise:
Foundations of Animal Health 1
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Principles of Genetics
Fundamentals of Cell Biology (interchangeable)

If not Fundamentals, what easy first sem level 2 science would you recommend? Or should I just leave it at the 3?

Thank you!

Hi,

I think if you're looking to maximise your GPA/average mark or whatever for the DVM fast track program you'll probably want to sacrifice CEDB20003 for a bludge breadth (look on other threas for breadth recommendations). Definitely keep GENE20001 as I heard it is quite easy to do well in. I recommend sacrificing CEDB20003 as I found it quite heavy in content and also it isn't really a prerequisite for other subjects (i.e. CEDB30002 and the other CEDB subjects can be done if you have done any one of CEDB20003/GENE20001/GENE20002/BCMB20002/ZOOL20006).

Doing the subjects you have there with CEDB20003 removed still keeps your options open -  you can still major in CEDB if you so wish for the reasons outlined above. I'd opt for the 3 subjects with 1 breadth to buff up your year 2 average.

Good luck :)

CEDB20003 is a lot harder in terms of content than its title and topics might suggest (but it's by no stretch of the imagination soul-crushing). If you're interested in it, I think you could survive four sciences :P I'm not a proponent of doing bludgey breadths just for the sake of a GPA boost; take a class (science or breadth) you're interested in! I suppose if you want an easier Lv2 science, I hear that the semester one food chemistry subject is very, very easy to get an H1 in.

I havne't done any of those subjects except BCMB20002, but I did four second year science subjects in second year, second semester (and four third year science subjects in third year, first semester.)

Yes, it's doable. Just manage your time, etc. You've got very little leeway in terms of putting a breadth on the back-burner, and SWOTVAC will be a living hell, but it's possible.

The only thing is that I would suggest reducing anything you do outside of uni (i.e. don't work too much.) Make sure you study constantly though the semester, ace all midsems etc and you'll be fine.

Thanks so much for the advice!

I was thinking Cell Bio just out of interest more than anything else, though I might leave it. Was a bit worried that I'd be disadvantaged not having the level 2 if I decided to major in it, but you're right, better I push my average up without it and dedicate a bit more time to each of the others.

I saw Food Chem and heard that it is easy, but it really doesn't interest me as much as some of the other subjects out there.

I'll have a look through some other subjects and have a think about what would work best. Thanks again!

You mentioned that you want to keep your options open - have you considered doing some Zoology subjects? My vet friends did zoology subjects as a back up just in case, and it was a good move on their behalf.

ZOOL20004 Australian Wildlife Biology was AWESOME. Quite an easy subject and really interesting.

I will strongly second this; the subject is great, maybe something a bit different, and not hard to H1 at all :)
