Just received my VCE results. I know its possible to not achieve the clearly in atar but still get into your course but does anybody think that a 94.30 will get me into Comm/Law at Monash which has a 98.00 atar.

Without SEAS/Monash access, you probably (highly likely) won't get in - sorry :S because the cut off fluctuates over the years and Com law is really competitive (20% below clearly in)

On to my next question. Let's say I'm to study commerce and try and transfer into law, is there an atar score which equates to the difficulty or even the effort to achieve an star score which equates to the difficulty of getting distinctions and transferring?

Not necessarily. ATARs reflect popularity and supply and demand (generally) so whilst the "good" courses tend to be the more popular ones, the required ATAR really isn't a difficulty indicator. As many of the older forum members will confirm, ATARs don't necessarily equate to GPAs either, it all depends on the work you put in.
Obvs going from a course that requires 65 to one that requires 95 might be tricky, but a lot of the content between subjects is the same, and if you're prepared to work hard there's no reason why an 80 should preclude you from an 85 course.
Cept VTAC of course.

Your ATAR is a relative percentage of your total mark achieved in VCE vs everyone elses - i.e. a ranking. So in real terms, it is impossible to compare an ATAR to a University Average - because University scores aren't normalised to give student a ranking. A 75 grade in a subject in University is exactly that; a reflection of your knowledge of the content (i.e. you know roughly 3/4 of the content taught in that class). It doesn't mean you are better than 75% of the class.

In regards to maintaining a 75 average in a Commerce - it is actually very simple (especially in 1st year). You:
- Attend ALL lectures and tutorials
- Read ALL the prescribed readings in the textbook (not just the lecture slides)
- Start your assignments early and finish them at least a week before the deadline (which you then use to reformat and refine)
- Make a detailed set of notes of each week of the curriculum for each subject (for exam revision)
- Get your hands on as many past exam papers as you can (from the library) and practice on them under exam conditions.

Do all this and I guarantee at least an 80.

What you notice about the steps above is that it is essentially the steps needed to achieve a 99 in VCE. It is one reason why people notice a correlation between VCE ranks and uni averages. Hard Work is all it takes to succeed.
