Choosing commerce subjects

Hey guys,

First year bcom student here, and even after AAD I'm having some trouble picking subjects.

I'm interested in accounting and management, but I also want to try out some of the other disciplines because I haven't had any experience with economics/finance/marketing etc before. However, I know actuarial studies is not something I would like to pursue. In addition, I'd also like to leave some space since I want to do some breadth subjects, particularly a language.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions for me? Where to go from here?

Accounting is one of the more rigid majors, so choosing subjects for it isn't too bad. http://bcom.unimelb.edu.au/majors/accounting_major. This page shows all the requirements to be accredited(quite important if you want to become a qualified accountant.) There is a bit of flexibility with Principles of B.law being offered in both semesters but that's about it.

OB, intro micro, intro macro are all compulsory subjects and give you the option of a management major and econ major. Finance 1/Principles of Marketing are electives you can consider.

But you will probably have to prioritise in the end between electives/breadths since the accounting major is quite strict if you want professional accreditation.

Thanks for the response! Yeah I think I'm just in denial about the prioritising thing.

Also, what kind of post graduate positions would possibly be available to students who have completed a major in either marketing or management? From everything I've heard, it just seems like aside from accounting and actuarial studies, nothing else is really employable.

You could complete a Masters degree after your undergrad at Unimelb or another university.

I think the Accounting and Finance majors are the most "employable" in Bcom. It might be hard if you're an Actuarial Studies major and you want to get an actuarial job, since there aren't many grad positions and they're pretty competitive. Not too sure about prospects with marketing or management majors, but I would assume it's not bad.
