I just received my mark for my last methods SAC and I lost a mark due to not simplifying

I was wondering is this fair or is my teacher being cruel??

Technically speaking, you should really simplify it into surds
However, I can understand your frustration; there has been many times that I lost marks for "incompleteness"
Your teacher is just trying to be exact so you can get a better score at the end of the year!!

I think its a little cruel, but if it was worth a large amount of marks then maybe there were marks assigned for simplifying the final result.

Usually though in VCAA exams there wouldn't be marks allocated for such things, and that's why they say things like "equivalent forms accepted" in examiner reports. Though if you have the time, feel free to simplify it down to neaten it up.

Sounds pretty harsh to me. I could understand losing a mark for leaving an imaginary number in the denominator in a question, but losing a mark for not simplifying a surd is harsh.
