Here's a great YouTube video on nominalisations (a crucial feature of formal language!), which no doubt you'll find interesting. Recall that nominalisations are when you convert a verb to a noun (e.g. investigate to investigation).

Why are nominalisations used in formal writing?

Compare these two examples:
1. He destablised the economy, which caused adverse effects.
2. The destablisation of the economy caused adverse effects.
