Hey guys...I'm getting 6-7 on my essays and was wondering if this is enough for roughly a 40ish study score. How much would you need on the exam per essay? I'm in the middle of my cohort.

Thanks everyone!

I think the consensus tends to be ~8/10 average (obviously swayed by SAC marks/ranks).  But whoever said English was anything about numbers!?!  Don't focus on the numbers - because let's face it, English teachers often give wildly different marks to the same essay - but focus on all the little stuff that's stopping you from pushing up the mark.  Has your teacher commented that you don't embed quotes properly?  Get a piece of paper and spend an hour practising it.  You're storytelling too much?  Focus ruthlessly on cutting it out.  Repeating the word 'positions' too much?  Thesaurus it.  And so on.  Pinpoint your mistakes and work at improving them (and give feedback on other people's essays) and your scores will skyrocket.

Wow, my teacher literally just said I need to embed quotes into my expository essay. She keeps saying it must be more complex...My SACs have all been pretty average (Oral - Medium, Language Analysis - Medium, Text Response (Mabo) - Medium, Context (EMITVIAL) - High). I know that 'M' means nothing to you as it not quantitative, they don't give us numbers for some reason. I believe that I'm starting to improve, slowly...anyways...

Thanks heaps, I'll keep all of that in mind!

And remember, you're always free to write a few sentences with embedded quotes, and post them asking for us to check if you've done the embedding right.  Or whatever your issue is.  Just work on fixing up the small stuff, and we're happy to check it over.

If you get a comment like 'needs to be more complex', ALWAYS ask the teacher exactly what they mean, because that's something pretty broad and intangible you can't work on.  What you want is a list of really specific things to do.

Hey...sorry to bother you about this again. I know all of you are sick of "Can I get a XX" posts, but this has been really bugging me.

I've been working really hard for English, reading sample essays, dissecting their structure and all that and I think I'm getting better. My question is, "Am I already screwed?". I'm in the middle of my cohort (a little above, maybe in the top 40%) and I've been getting 'Mediums' (6-7) for all my SACs except one (8, High). We have one SAC left (TX for Stasiland, I think I'll do Mabo in the final exam). If I manage to get them up in time for the exam, can I still get a high 30/low 40? I've seen heaps of "You need 3 A's to get 38" around the net, and I'm hoping I'll get something like "B B A"...as I'm aiming for around 8 in each essay". Anyways...

Thanks friend.
