More like, they get fired if they have low-achieving students :P
Seriously though, in public schools there is a set wage based on seniority. Not sure about private schools.

I thought that teacher wages depended on what category of teacher they fell into (whether they took on coordinating duties, whether they were an AP, and so on).

oh i see.. nowonder their working attitudes differ so much.

i endorse teachers who see their job as a vocation.
there are also teachers who bludge to the extent where almost everyone in the class has a tutor.

I thought it was largely based on years of teaching experience? And hence the reason for the push for performance-based pay since this sort of system is obviously rubbish =\
