EDIT: As LoadedWithPotatoes has pointed out, the following is for people studying Units 1/2 next year, as the Units 3/4 component is changing in 2017. If you're doing Units 3/4 in 2016, it won't change.

'Reading and responding' has changed to 'Reading and creating texts'. The analytical part (writing essays) hasn't changed too much. It's still about analysing the language and literary features of the texts (e.g. imagery, character development, narrative, even sound devices and punctuation etc) and looking at how they create meaning. When we say 'create meaning', not only does this mean what the writer's trying to convey, but also how this helps us, as readers, form our own interpretations.

However, there's an added component of a creative response SAC (Literature-esque) based on the text which you'll have to do, which is basically creative writing based on the themes and features of your chosen text. If creative writing isn't your forte, rest assured, it's only a SAC which counts for ~30% of Unit 3, and not on the actual end of year exam.

Context has been completely replaced by 'Comparing texts', which is drawing connections between two texts and focusing on how they, in conjunction, create meaning and complement each other. Again, very Literature-esque. Just think of it as Text Response, but having to compare two texts and look at them as a whole entity.

Language analysis and the persuasive oral have just become 'Analysing argument' and 'Presenting argument', so it's essentially the same. However, there's now a greater emphasis on finding the contentions/arguments whereas before, it was mostly language features which you had to analyse.

The exam will consist of:
Section A - Text Response, pretty much (analytical essay on text)
Section B - Comparative Text Response
Section C - Language and Argument Analysis

English is changing for Year 11's only next year. The accredation period for the EAL/English Study design is from 2017-2020 for the new one. Hence, 2016 Year 12's are the last year to have context writing.
