Hi guys, so I'm doing the Republican Movement for my oral presentation (I'm for the movement), and I'm trying to rebut the argument that by becoming a republic, we'd have to change our flag, which is disrespectful to the past soldiers who fought under that flag.

Any advice on how I can rebut this??

I would talk about how Australian soldiers didn't fight for something as superficial as the design of a flag but for Australian society and values. In fact, by removing the union jack from our flag, we acknowledge that these soldiers weren't mere subjects of the British empire but resolutely Australian, fighting for the liberty and prosperity of their own nation (more relevant to WW2 Kokoda track stuff)

There's the basic rebuttal which is that whilst our soldiers fought under out flag, they didn't fight for it. They fought for the principles which underpin the free, democratic society that Australia is today which is clearly not under siege from such a movement.
