Can an exam remark reduce your score?
« on: February 10, 2016, 01:45:52 pm »
I missed a course that is better suited to my future pathway by 0.6, so if I gain as little as one aggregate point I might scrape it for that course, and therefore be in an advantageous position for a mid year transfer (that is, if my ATAR even matters mid year? idk)

However, my other problem is that if I lose any points, my ATAR will be too low for the course I'm currently in lol (I am happy with this course though, so feeling really conflicted :/). Is it possible to lose anything?

Is having my exam remarked even worth it?

You won't get kicked out of your current course considering you've already enrolled and registered for classes. Further, I've heard that if you end up getting a lower score from an exam remarking, you just keep whichever one was higher. You've already used your ATAR for its purpose, so you definitely shouldn't worry about losing out on what you have.

In terms of whether it's actually worth the money and time needed to remark it (on top of the possibility that you scores might not even change), it's basically just up to you. If you felt like you were really robbed on an exam, it might be worth following up on. 1 aggregate point won't make a difference for midyear or end-of-year transfers in my opinion, though.

With regards to transferring, your ATAR will still be of relevance for mid-year transfers. However, it is also considered alongside your uni grades at the same time.

thanks Alter :)

I've already paid for it, just waiting on VCAA to send the exam to my school

another question: Should I hire a tutor or something to inspect the exam with me? (my HHD teacher left, and the ones that remain have no experience)

Most of the time, it isn't. Your ATAR is a tertiary admissions rank, that's it. Once you get into a course, it's irrelevant 99% of the time. In my opinion I think you should put all your effort into the first semester of university and request a transfer. Your university scores outweigh your ATAR and are more relevant to your actual achievements (because the marks are usually based on merit, rather than ranking/scaling).

I view it as being completely irrelevant after you get into a university, because simply being enrolled at a university creates a pathway for you to transfer later on. But since you've already requested it, you may as well get it inspected.

If you feel like this is a good idea, why not? Usually as the student, you can detect whether something hasn't been marked adequately. But it's always good to get someone else to confirm your doubts!

As Alter said, it cannot. This is the same process that occurs in university remarking as well. If you request a remark and the remark results in a higher score than what was previously reported, then you will get the highest one of the two.

Good luck

Hehe, except in Monash Medicine. If you ask for an assignment remark, generally they take your assignment and mark it ridiculously harshly; if you ask for a remark your assignment grade usually goes down so we never ask for remarks. :P

Probably because if they're known to give better grades then every single student will apply for a remark, med students take marks wayyyyy too seriously haha. Good move for their sanity :P

If only you could see the posts on my (old) cohort's FB group because we didn't get a breakdown of our results this year (we got our results ages ago). It's not like we're going to look over our obs/gyn score (for example) and then re-read all those notes/books if we did poorly... We have no more exams so not sure why people care so much... Med students are the worst.

I hope this isn't offensive but maybe a lot of you guys just want to be your very best which is the reason why you got into med in the first place
