First Year Subjects

I read that you "have to complete at least six first year subjects". My question is...do you?

Edit: If you were to complete a Diploma of Languages, could first year language subjects within the diploma count towards this requirement without cross-crediting?

For Bsci is at least five, tried to get an exemption for it last semester and the dean said no.
