Introduction
In Penn’s Into the Wild and Davidson’s Tracks, Chris and Robyn seek dramatic change in their respective lives and take the steps and overcome the challenges needed to fulfil this ambition. Both characters find themselves overwhelmed with their everyday existence and feel the need to escape. While Robyn seeks to escape the stereotypical expectations placed on her by society, Chris also feels the need to explore a life beyond the constrained one that his parents desire for him. The natural environments that each life in at the beginning of the texts are replaced by the harsh Australian outback for Robyn and the hostile Alaskan wilderness for Chris. While both characters face both physical and social challenges along the way, it is ultimately Robyn who succeeds in her journey.

Paragraph 1- Both Davidson and McCandless face many physical challenges along the way. The two characters struggle at times with their own survival.

Paragraph 2 – Penn and Davidson also explore the ways in which their main characters faced social barriers over the course of their journeys.
