Hi everyone,

I am preparing for scholarships and selective entry for year 11 and I am having so much trouble finding a tutor. Not only that but resources to practise on. I am wondering how did you guys study for it, some people say they go through the textbook, I know that doesn't work for me. Also where did you find resources to practise on, there is some online on the government website but it isn't much. There is also scholarship books for sale, if anyone brought them, where they helpful?

Hey!
I recently sat the entrance exam into SCHS for year 11 entry, and also got selected. I did close to no study for the mathematics, reading comp and the reasoning tests, and don't really know much on resources, techniques and tips on how to study for that, but I did however write a lot. I tried to write an essay or narrative every 1-2 days, before I think around 1 months leading up the exam. You have a lot of time to study for it, so that's a positive. For writing, you can find heaps of prompts online. You should pick a random prompt every time you write, and aim to write a persuasive or narrative. I advise you to alternate between the writing pieces (persuasive and narrative), and practise that way.

Unfortunately, I don't really know how to prepare for the other tests, as I didn't really do much, other than look through my year 9/10 maths textbook a few days before the exam. I do however, suggest you read a lot of books, to build up your vocabulary and comprehension skills. I don't really know much else tbh, but if I do find/remember something, I'll let you know. :)

Thank you so much for your quick response! I'm so happy for you :D Also can I ask you did you have a interview about any of your extra curricular activities, if so what did you do/say?

No worries. I did have to an interview, where I was asked how I managed my extra-curricular activities and school work, my current school, etc. Just to mention, everyone who sat the exam had to complete a written response to the school, in which we were asked 3 questions. If I can remember, they were along the lines of; why we wanted to come to the school, our achievements, and what the school values meant to us.

They didn't really ask too much about my extra-curricular activities in the interview, as they already knew from the written response. My main achievement was/is cricket, and they asked me some questions about that. They wanted me to tell them how I planned to progress in cricket, and how to develop it as a possible pathway. They also asked me to explain how I balanced my school life with my extra curricular life.

Just to add for some extra info, they wanted me to tell them something what I liked about my current school, which was quite an interesting question. As I go to a Christian school, I said that I get to learn about a culture different from mine, and understand how other religions and societies differ from mine.

Just a heads up, I recommend not over-practicing for the interview. Reason being that I feel the answers to their questions should be natural and fluent, and not rehearsed and robotic. This makes for a genuine conversation, and not just a process where you're trying to impress the interviewer (you still need to do that btw haha). Also, try to be confident and clear, trying not to sound scared and nervous (you will probs be nervous though, it's natural to be). Try to be a leader in group activities, if you take part in them, but not too bossy and over-shadowing. :)

Hope this helps, and I'll be more than happy to answer any more questions that you may have.
