So like every year 12, I just completed my English exam. This has been a really hard year for me, I have depression and my grandmother recently passed. After unit 3, my marks have gone from good to barely passing. I did the language analysis, didn't do any of the comparative and did an intro and 1 body paragraph for the text response. Now that I have failed English, I'm just stuck on what options I'm limited to. Do I still even get an atar?
Sorry to hear about your difficult circumstances
If you feel like you have a case (or if you're unsure whether or not you have a case) to apply for a DES (derived exam score) - I'd speak to your school as applications have to be done within a certain number of days of completing your exams. Could definitely be worth looking into.
Regardless, I think it would be wise to speak to your year 12 coordinator or someone similar for some advice - both about English, how to tackle your remaining exams, etc.

I think that they're a lot better equipped to provide advice than we are.
You'll still definitely get a study score for English - in VCE, because it's all ranking based, and grades fluctuate from year to year depending on the performance of each cohort, there's no actual "fail". Your study score may indeed be lower, which will perhaps result in a lower ATAR due to English's position in the top 4 subjects when calculating the ATAR, but you a) still definitely get an ATAR and b) a good performance in your other subjects will boost your ATAR. As User1011 said, try to smash your remaining exams

I just want to say as an aside, and this is for everyone: year 12 isn't the be all and end all - the number you get at the end of the year is simply a tiny key to the front door. Your mental health is infinitely more important than any number.
