Domestic violence vs family violence?: Essay

Hi!

We have an in class family essay, however we have been given the question: "Evaluate the effectiveness of legal and non legal responses to the protection of victims of domestic violence."

The teacher's aren't allowed to help us, and i'm a bit confused.

First of all, i can't figure out wether we're supposed to focus mainly on the crime aspect (ADVO, elevated police powers) or the civil aspect (how the court protects children, family law act), since this is the family law chapter. Relating to this, can family violence and domestic violence be used interchangeably?

My second issue is the structure. We were advised 800-1000 words, so would 4 paragraphs be the right amount? I was thinking of structuring the body paragraphs as: legal, legal, non-legal, non-legal

Last question, would i need to have definitions (DV, AVO, etc) in my essay?

Thanks for the Help  :) :) :)

Do you have more specific instructions or a rubric?

Impossible to answer many of your questions without more details.

I have a hunch but I don't want to give you my assumptions as answers.

Thanks for the reply!

So the notification also said:
- Read the relevant parts of the textbook
- Research the topic of DV regarding legal and non-legal measures

Assessment criteria:
- Explain the role of law in conflict and cooperation
- Access interrelationships
- Analyse differing perspectives and interpretations of legal issues

That's literally all  :(

Hey there!! ;D

So the answer to your first question is probably the criminal aspect - Purely because you'll likely find more specific evidence to that regard. Once you get into the civil stuff, you start to drift into a more generic Family Law essay unless you find specific legal examples of how domestic violence plays into things. Anything relating to DV is fine though unless you've been told otherwise, I would say! :)

On the terms, you can use them interchangeably in HSC essays, but to be in line with the syllabus, I would stick with Domestic Violence ;D

Typically, essays do not have definitions, you assume the marker is fluent with the terminology. I'd say that's the case for this task too ;D

Thanks Jamon! Do you think i could discuss battered wife defence as one of my legal responses? Or is it too crime related?

Nah that's definitely good! It's a criminal defence specific to Domestic Violence, I always included that in my DV essays :)
