Mechatronics Engineering/Computer Science

Hi guys!
Just wondering if anyone had any insight on engineering and what prospects a mechatronics degree would yield. I've heard that it is a mix of different disciplines and so I'm wondering if it goes into depth for a position that isn't mechatronics. For example if I did this degree, could I find a job as an electrical engineer?

I'll put this disclaimer here first. I'm not fully familiar with the engineering industry. Hopefully someone in the area can fill you in and/or confirm all this.

From a quick look at various Victorian mechatronics courses (or engineering courses with the mechatronics specialisation), most cover the fact that you might not necessarily work in just the mechatronics industry and want to branch out. There are a few that are a bit more specialist, which you could find out from a bit of research e.g. starting with VTAC Course Search.

As for prospects, I'll leave this Monash brochure (page 17) and this site for RMIT's Engineering-Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics (Honours) degree, both of which include career pathways from mechatronics degrees that may not necessarily be directly related to mechatronics. Some potential careers include software engineer, process engineer and quality engineer. Note that this is just a few minutes' worth of research; there's probably a lot more than that.

Thank you so much AngelWings! Will definitely check out the links you've provided. I've already researched a fair bit into degrees and scholarships regarding mechatronics (quite important being an international student haha).

I was also wondering if anyone had any experience with this degree regarding placements or job offers ( how difficult was it or whether the uni support system helped a lot).

Fair enough. There are a number of engineering students on AN, so they’ll be able to help a bit more re: support systems, jobs and placements.

In the meantime, have a look at the courses via their university handbook (either check course maps or search via Google “[insert university] handbook” and go via the appropriate degrees). This should give you an indication as to how much practical and industry work you’ll be doing in the degree and might help you decide which one you prefer.
