Advice about BA

Hi guys, I think this post is in the right spot, but if it isn’t then please move it and I’m sorry in advance 😂😂

I’m thinking about doing either Monash or Melbourne BA, and I just wanted to know what people thought of the Melbourne course. Also, if anyone’s done the criminology and/or economics majors then any specific advice about those would be great Thanks!

seeing as you asked about economics major though im bcomm i'll answer... first year is not too bad (never did eco in vce) but is just getting used to the basics... starts to jump up a bit in second year when calculus is introduced in micro and dynamic models in macro... third year is a bit of a jump from second where many complained about being unprepared for micro so maybe do the specialist pathway i believe they advocate for further study now otherwise there are many other options for 3rd year economics where it'd probably complement the humanities in an arts degree and maybe open some doors for jobs... methods is a pre-req though but there's a bridging course

Sorry about offering more questions than answers, but does anyone know what’s the difference between doing economics in bachelor of arts and doing economics in bachelor of commerce at Melbourne? I know you get different electives but is there an actual difference with the content that’s taught? What about in terms of course structures etc?

For example, would economics in arts be more politics/humanities focused while economics in commerce is more maths focused?

There is no difference at all, since they are doing the same subjects and the requirements of an economics major are still the same

as said no difference plus you can also complete further study in economics with arts background only difference is if you completed commerce your second major would also be commerce related whilst bachelor of arts obviously second major arts related if you choose a second major

Thanks for the response! I think it’s worth noting that I’m intending on minoring in eco simply because methods is recommended for the major and not for the minor, which is because econometrics (the math-heavy side of economics etc etc) is only in the major course and not in the minor (as far as I can tell), so I don’t think I’ll have to worry about calculus or any of that.
Do you mind if I ask you what you think of the university overall? Also, how’s economics, aside from the content, like the lectures and lecturers? Thanks!

University and economics are great... best period of my education studying at Melbourne... come eager to learn and the tutors and lecturers will help =)
