This is an unfinished piece, as I'm not sure whether where I'm going with this is good or not. I'm worried about whether the statements I make are too absolute, and if I should tone this down a bit.
‘A strong sense of identity depends on belonging to community as well as to family.’“Nothing of me is original, I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known”, words from Palahniuk. As developing persons, we imitate rather than create. Acquiring knowledge is a form of imitation, likewise acquiring an identity is another form of human imitation. Hence, personal identity is a fallacious concept. Humanities’ identity is collective, an individual’s attempt at forming an identity is severed in parallel to their connection with society.
Association with community provides the basis for human social development and sustenance. This association influences the forging of ourselves. Whether consciously or uncontrollably if one floats through life as a single entity and hence without the aforementioned association, an identity becomes a utopian idea. For this single unrelated entity there is nothing to mimic, nothing to imitate.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
