Hi all,

I need some advice in regards to subject selection. I am going into Yr 11 next year and I have to pick 1 subject from 3 options (Music 2, Chemistry or engineering studies). I have already selected English (2u), German, Ext 1 maths and accelerating 2u maths and physics. All 3 subjects have their pros and cons and any advice is much appreciated.

Hi...

These 3 subjects seem to be vastly different, so it would depend a lot on your interests, as well as what you think you will pursue after school.

If you are interested in a STEM or engineering career post-school, then chemistry or engineering studies would be favourable.

Chemistry is also particularly helpful for a lot of healthcare careers, e.g. pharmacy, nursing, nutrition. This was the only 1 of the three that I studied myself, and I would definitely recommend! It would pair nicely with physics, I would think, as it involves some scientific calculations, but it is also reasonably content heavy.

I'm not too familiar with engineering studies, but I think that the types of skills that you learn in the course e.g. critical thinking, accuracy, innovation etc. would be helpful for any career, really. Keep in mind that a large part of the course is an engineering report (sort of like a major work, I think), so it may require more attention than other subjects.

If you are interested in a career in music or performing arts, then music 2 is favourable (some uni degrees have music 2 as assumed knowledge, I believe). Music 2 is also very specialised subjects, and assumes you already have a good grounding in musical theory. Do you play an instrument or are confident with theory? Music also has a practical component to the assessments, which is something to consider, whether you flourish in practical or theory assessments. Futhermore, music is more of a creative subject compared to the other two (and less content heavy), so if you feel like you may be overwhelmed with content for other subjects, then music 2 could be your pick.  :)

Hopefully this is some food for thought to help you in your decision!  :)
