JMSS 2020 interview preparation

Trying out for JMSS 2020 year 10 enrollment. I got to the interview and it’s on Aug 12th, which is ten days away. That interview is unique and distinctive, and I don’t know much about it. For people who go through the interview (whatever failed or succeed) welcome to share experiences! For who preparing like me, you are also welcome to discuss!

I don't know much about JMSS but I'd love to share my personal experience with the interview for the select-entry program at my own school...

During my personal interview, I had a hard-copy portfolio that I gave to the interviewers to aid them in asking me questions. It really helped me to feel confident and prepared for anything they might ask so I would highly recommend it for you if the school allows it. Also, be prepared to tell your interviewers why you want to go to this specific school and your personal qualities as those are standard question that are asked all the time!

We had two team tasks to complete in the group interview as well and I thought they hadn't gone very well - I was pretty quiet and we didn't complete them both in time - but it doesn't actually matter. The interviewers are only trying to see if you can interact well with others. To stand out, you could encourage others a lot and just generally be a leader even if others are very shy.

Good luck and do let us know how it went!

Thanks a lot. But they are asking for certificates, which I don’t have at all, and school reports, what I suck at (except for math and science tests) help!

Hmmm... If you play a musical instrument you could include exam certificates. Otherwise, leadership activities and sports team lists may help as well. You could also include things you've participated in even if you didn't win a certificate as it'll show that you have a can-do attitude and are resilient.
Don't worry about your reports, though, if you got through to the interview it's because you'll be able to cope with the schoolwork and they believe you're a good fit for the school.

Bring whatever you feel is relevant. This includes any participation in extracurricular activities and anything that shows your involvement and passion in science/maths. If you don't have anything all you need to do is explain to the interviewer why not and how you would use the opportunity to study at JMSS to change that. Then talk about how your current school doesn't have programmes/facilities that JMSS does and how it would benefit you specifically.

I have no certificates, one reason is I stayed a relatively short time here, the other one is, all the competitions stuff are participated by the SELP people. For the AMC yesterday, SELP people are automatically registered no matter they want it or not, and I and others are PROHIBITED 🚫 to join. I’m jealous of those selective entrance learning program people, they got so much privilege.

In that case, then u can probably say about how you had such a short time here. Talk about competitions that you are interested in joining. E.g. Just sign up for a science local competition and then u can just tell the interviewers about how you are going to attend it and how you are excited about it for the future.

I had looked at earlier threads (like RLLY early) and your name was spotted a couple of times. If you don't mind me asking, did u get into JMSS? (I just wanna know ur experience of VCE at that school and what I will be missing if I don't get in).

You can use that to your advantage and explain why you couldn't do said competition. The assessors want to know why you would fit as a JMSS student and how you could use the opportunities they provide. What's the point in coming into the interview with every certificate in the world as that just means you'd be fine staying in your current school. Talk about how they can help you and how you can help them if you want to do well.

Yep, I did get in back in 2016 and am graduating this year. All I can say is JMSS provides opportunities which you would never think of getting in your current school like international trips and competitions. As for VCE, it's pretty much the same as other schools except for the learning environment as expected. A smart student will succeed regardless of the school they go to.

I got some notes(around 3 pages) that describes what could benefit the students that joined jmss, but not what kind of people they want. I just heard the phrase “passion in science and maths” nothing else. I don’t think this alone can be useful.
But I still think I can discuss something, like I learn ahead of others, synthesize equations for fun and learning purposes, and even apply the knowledge to experiments. And maybe show some pictures like I was experimenting with a small, uncontrolled electronic car running across the room in seconds, when I was 7 years old? Or recent projects, sometimes get overly ambitious and failed for many reasons (no money, primitive tool etc.) Or I’ll be discussing that how I will be doing my career with science ?

Is it true does who never got an invitation to an interview never received an email. Here's my theory some students received emails telling they received an interviews does who did not make the cut did not receive emails. If emails are out for those who have receive interviews it is very likely those who had no emails did not get invited. I hope to see my results in late September and see my rejection  on there.

Lol yes your last sentence is so true and is what drives me to do the interviews till date. Isn't there like a methods test if u get in? For that test, was there like topics from actual Mathematical methods, like calculus, matrices, functions etc.? Soz for being too annoying  :P, since I have a low chance of getting in, I thought I might as well do a mini Methods test at home myself similar to the JMSS  Methods exam.

What time is your interview?? Mines on the same day. You are gonna do well man. I've seen your other posts and you seem very interested in science and that's what JMSS wants. You seem to be very knowledgeable and passionate. It's not exactly your fault you don't have many certificates since you haven't been here for long. Even if it's rare, I have a family friend who didn't have that much extra curricular activities as she only came to Australia about 11 months before the exam, but still managed to get in. Even I don't have much certificates. But I think your huge interest in science is gonna get you in.

I don't have much to support my interest in science and I'm not social and struggle to speak in groups. I'm just really mad because I came this far and I don't wanna fail. I have a lot of competition since I have two campuses as well. I don't even know man, but I think you have high chance cuz you seem so dedicated and determined. As long as you show you passion in science, which you obviously do. i think you have big big big chance.
I'm so passionate about science too but I can't really express myself well and it says I'am often late to home group and I need to improve my punctuality in both my school reports.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ So I have a low chance, because I don't think they will want a kid that's late to school all the time.. screw public transport.

Sorry I'm no help but I just don't want you to doubt yourself, you are gonna get in my guy.

I got awful results except math (which is the only A I got last semester), I even got a C for science (but I got more than 80% on tests). Probably I will use “been here for a short time, can’t satisfy all the complicated standards in the IB class” as an excuse. Indeed, the formats of homework and lab reports are frustrating for me
But actually, you are indeed helpful, even sometimes sounds a bit pessimistic or sarcastic. Don’t worry about transportation, we’ll do more science and it might help you (let’s break the sound barrier together!)
Interestingly, at Aug 14th I got here last year, and the interview is 12th, still insufficient for a year.
