I’ve look at the VCAA rubric and it’s like “thoughtful” vs “sophisticated” comparisons for section B and “insightful” (8] vs “competent” (9-10) grasp of the ideas issues and complexity of the text.

Is mentioning authorial intent the difference Between and 8 and 9? What exactly would it be in simple terms? What makes the difference between “grappling” (8]with implications of topic and “exploring” (9-10) the implications of the topic? Implications are authorial intent right?

“Cohesively structured” (9-10) vs “well-structured) (8] piece?

This is for section B (comparative Btw)

EDIT: the  8) are actually number 8’s as in 8/10 essays!!!

I don't think there is a completely straightforward answer that everyone will agree on given English is so subjective but I think:

9-10 essays have their paragraphs and sentences well structured. They would have more nuanced ideas in response to the prompt. Uses "sophisticated" language but doing so an appropriate fashion (i.e. not just shoehorning "big" words for the sake of it which is somewhat obvious in some students essays). Has some sort of flair which makes the essay engaging and interesting to read.

I think 8's are still very good essays but "good" in the sense that they check all the so-called "boxes" but not necessarily being an interesting piece of writing in itself (e.g. outside the context of a VCE Exam) - maybe this distinguishes more between essays that receive 9's and 10's though - hence personal preference on the examiner's part being a big factor in discerning between 9's and 10's.

Also examiner's mood :P
