well what I do is basically aim to read the book i'm studying every night. I've read life of pi about 4 times already, reading it for 5th time. I practise writing essay questions that our teachers have given out(getting low A+'s at the moment) and summarise chapters and memorise quotes.

Just reading your texts over and over does not really help...
I would suggest reading 3 times at most. I read my texts only once each.
What you really want to do is while you're reading the second and third time, find the most prominent scenes, dialogue ect. to discuss..
Detail is very important for text response.. Study guides tend to offer some very good ideas to start with, and you can just add your own opinions and things you have found in your own reading.
I would also very strongly suggest discussing your ideas. When people challenge your opinions, it really does help you to reinforce to yourself exactly what justification you have.
