Subject Choice

Just a few questions for those in the Bcom (or anyone who can answer them):

1. Since I want to do the breadth engineering sequence as part of my course, I need to do 112.5 breadth over the 3 years (that's 37.5 per year). That's over the 100 maximum breadth points, so I was wondering, do I need to inform them that I'm choosing this pathway or do I just pick the necessary subjects and they'll figure it out?

2. On the topic of necessary subjects, does anyone know if there are actually specific subjects that are compulsory as part of the engineering sequence? (Looking at a civil or mechanical major, but for now in first year it doesn't matter yet..)? I've got down: Linear Algebra, Calculus 2, and ESD 1 (Or is it ESD 2??). Is that right?

3. I have two subjects left over as commerce electives  (instead of three) after I choose my engineering subjects. I've already filled in one with Finance 1 (looking to major in finance), and I'm not sure what to put down as my second elective. The guy at the subject appointment today recommended Accounting Reports and Analysis, but should I pick that? Anyone know what it's like?

I can only really answer the third question so sorry but I'm sure someone else will know the first two.

I would reccommend you do ARA. It's an introductory Accounting subject (covers most of the VCE course) that starts from scratch with no prior assumed knowledge. Even though you're not looking at majoring in Accounting, it's still beneficial to you to at least have a basic knowledge of the subject.

Alternatively, if you're not keen on Accounting at all, you could look at a doing subjects in Management or Marketing.

But like I said, I recommend that you do at least one first year accounting subject to give you a feel for it. After that, theres plenty of finance subjects to chose from.

Ok thanks Yeah that's what the guy pretty much said to me, that it's useful to have a basic understanding of accounting as it compliments other areas well. It's just the idea of accounting doesn't quite appeal to me (I was actually looking at those two subjects you just posted), but I guess I'll try it and see from there.

So who can help with the others (especially no. 2 about esd 1 and 2)

Does anyone know when the closing date for subject changes is? Also sorry, unrelated question - do we have to pick up some HECS form to fill out from the uni, or is the online page enough?

In another thread, monash students seem to be talking about arranging their timetables - do we get to as well, or are they automatically generated by alloc8 for us to view later?

With engineering you need calc 2, linear algebra, ESD 1 AND ESD 2. I don't know if you need physics for civil.

hey sorry, saw this post after i sent ur pm.

with regards to 1) you're right that u go over the 100 point limit. the engineering department pays for one of the extra subjects through what they call CAP. dunno what it stands for, but it actually doesn't fall under your B.Comm breadth, and thus allows u to do more breadth than other students. what will happen, is when summer semester begins to roll around, lisa hayes (i think that's her name) will send a email round to the b.comm students asking engineering peeps to fill out a form. submit that, and the subjects u do (assuming they're esd2/eng maths) over the summer will be paid for by the uni and not count towards ur breadth subjects.
