Maybe if you wern't up to the scope of unit 1 & 2 physics you shouldn't have taken on units 3 & 4.

ddaly, while these questions aren't the hardest you'll ever get, they aren't trivial either. I remember there being a lot of confusion in my year 12 class about similar questions in sacs. The tricky thing about connected bodies can often be deciding which collection of bodies to apply forces or accelerations to.

That question is weird. Since you considered no tension, you must consider both weights. Fnet=Mg
(m1+m2)a=m1g (since the net force acts on both bodies)

In my post I also outlined a way to do it by considering tension.
