Has anyone ever been to one of these? What do you do exactly? Are they useful. I went to a couple for assignments and it was just people bombarding the tutors there asking for clues and stuff.

It's basically an informal tutorial where you can ask the tutor any question you may have.  Unlike normal tutorials, attendance is obviously not marked and you do not need to stay for the entire thing.  Attendance itself is low-medium during the semester (depending on the time of the day) unless there is an assignment due like you have pointed out.

So if you don't have any specific question it's pretty pointless to go?

Well if you are unclear of some concepts but don't know which particular questions to ask, you can go if you wish and hope that someone is in the same boat as you or you could go if you have a large gap in your timetable and you have nothing else to do during that time.  But I can't really say if it's worth it on a permanent basis since I only went to two of them - one at the beginning of the semester and one when assignment 2 for intro microeconomics was nearly due.
