library reserve

What does it mean if books are held in the library reserve? You can't borrow them at all or you can only borrow them for a short amount of time? Where is this library reserve (in the Matheson)? Is it a certain section of the library or does it just mean a particular book is classified as under reserve?

I could probably find this all out tomorrow myself but I don't have time to be there for long and need to get stuff for an assignment so I'd like to be informed in order to be as efficient as possible :)

IRRC: Reserve means it's in a particular section of the library (in the Hargraves, it's next to the check out desk). You can only rent books from there for either 3 hours or overnight.

I went there because my assignment said that the books i'd need would be held in the library reserve. When i searched them on the computer they were all on loan and they defintely weren't on the shelf. grrrr why are reserved books allowed out for two weeks -__-

Anything in the reserved usually goes very quickly - which is why I buy my textbooks so I always have a copy.

But it's only supposed to be overnight or 3 hours. These books said they were on loan until the 29th of August, for example. Idgi

I know how you feel. I hate trying to find books at Monash for assignments, even when they're not on reserve, since the ones I desperately need are always checked out.

Here's a little tip that'll help you for the remainder of your degree. Ask for a CAVAL card from the Monash Library Loans Desk, which'll allow you to register as a patron of nearly every university library in Australia. It's such an undervalued tool but it's a lifesaver, for sure. There's a high likelihood that you can take home the books you require from other university libraries for a week or two. That way, you don't need to sit in the library all day at Monash reading a particular book from reserve.

Are you sure they were reserve? What books are they?

And yes, CAVAL cards are awesome and only take like 5 minutes to sign up for!

I'm not sure, on Blackboard for INT1020 it had this list of books and said they could be found in the library reserve. There was about 8 books for the topic I had chosen and none of them were in there because they had all been borrowed. Maybe they weren't actually in the reserve, and people had just borrowed them from the general collection. Which is still annoying.  If you have a subject with 200 people, 3 topics and 8 DECENT books on each.... they shouldn't be able to be borrowed for 2 weeks -_-

I've got the same problem with a book for the subject I'm studying right this minute. Went to Hargrave today and it was all out, so I've just resorted to using Wikipedia with the lecture slides rather than the textbook to study right now. Seems to be working pretty well o.O

Haha, I'm thinking I'm going to have to make sure I start researching for my big essays wayyyyy ahead of the time their due, to stop the good books being gone. Relying on online articles is a pain when your internet is too slow to load my.monash 25 days out of the month(my step dad seems to think paying $91 a month for 7gb of internet is reasonable... but that's a whole other story -_-)
