Commerce vs. Commerce

Hey guys,

Been thinking lately about what course I should apply for, and until recently, I had BComm/LLB down as my first preference. But as I read the newspaper, I found that UniMelb has a MUCH higher ranking compared to Monash. So then I though maybe I should apply for straight Commerce at UniMelb.

Is there a major difference between UniMelb and Monash when it comes to Commerce, and do employers consider UniMelb to be more 'prestigious' for lack of a better word? Assuming I have entry to both Uni's, which one should I apply for? I'm thinking I should ignore doing LLB, as my main focus was and is on the Commerce side of things.

Any tips/advice/knowledge would be much appreciated,

Thanks in advance,
Sam

the nearer one!
Im pretty sure pretty much anyone would say in Australia, both unis are about equal in terms of employment opportunity and the such
2010 - 2013: Bachelor of Software Engineering - Monash (completed w/ alternative exit to B. Comp Sci)
2014 - 2016: Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) - Monash

for majors such as Economics and Finance (The one's I'm doing) Melbourne  is generally regarded higher than Monash. I think for Accounting and the rest of the majors such as Marketing, Management etc. They are similarly regarded.

It's generally the same... not much difference, I know quite a few finance professors from UoM and spoke to them whether commerce @ uom was any better than Monash, for undergraduate there's not too much difference. However if you want to go for prestige, PhD @ Harvard would be the best.
PhD @ MIT (Economics).

Interested in asset pricing, econometrics, and social choice theory.

Lol. Harvard is the plan a few years down the track.

Another question: Is it worth doing a LLB now or waiting, completing an under-grad in Commerce and going on and completing the JD/MBA at Melb?

Thanks for responses so far. Just got to get my head around the law question and then I'll be able to make a choice. Btw, I'm closer to Monash, so that's seeming the most likely place at the moment.

Well, I think the LLB/Bcomm path would take a year shorter but it's up to you I guess; the JD covers pretty much the same content as the LLB though there are students with a more diverse set of skills and it's pretty cool to have people coming from all sorts of undergrad areas.
What is the ATAR requirement for the Bcomm/LLB at Monash? If you're interested in doing both commerce and law, you'll probably want to consider the application process to the JD - if you get guaranteed CSP entry, I'd probably take the Bcomm/JD path. Personally, I am going to choose Bcomm/JD at Melbourne because they have had an actuarial program for quite a while so they provide exemptions from the IAA exams and the actuarial program at Monash is relatively new. Also, the lecturers at Melbourne seem pretty good!

If you're uncomfortable with going to Monash then just go to UoM and there's (maybe) a lower chance of you having regrets, particularly if your focus is on Commerce anyway.

ATAR for BComm/LLB at Monash is roughly 98.25ish from memory. I was actually more interested in doing the JD/MBA, but that requires a minimum of two years full-time work experience. Also, to get into the JD, you need to complete an undergraduate degree, and can't do this concurrently. Whereas, with Monash, you can complete LLB with other undergraduate degrees. I think you're looking at 6 years (3 for undergrad + 3 for JD) at UoM, and 5 at Monash.

Why do you say that?

I had the same decision to make in 2008, and I ended up choosing Melbourne -> JD. My reasons mainly focused around the location, "prestige" *shrug*, facilities (new commerce building is really nice) and flexibility. Was it the right decision? I'm not sure, I would have certainly chosen LLB/BCom at Melbourne had it still been available. However I am really enjoying commerce @ Melbourne so far.

So you're planning on doing JD after you complete your Commerce degree?

Probably not straight after my Commerce degree, I plan to work for a bit and see what kind of support my work has for further study (probably work on CA directly after uni). But eventually yes, and a MBA at the same time possibly (although you would probably need to go full time for that).

I was interested in the JD/MBA as well. I'm thinking its probably overkill to do undergrad BComm/LLB @ Monash, ten JD/MBA later.

For me I reckon BComm (Hons) --> JD --> Work Experience --> LLM --> Career, but this is subject to change... it's too early to decide that far on so early.

Remember you will need to do the LSAT.

Also you can still do the LLB after you graduate, you don't HAVE to do it concurrently with your other degree. I work with a girl who finished her arts degree, waited a year and decided she felt like law. She's now in 2nd year LLB.
