Privacy Laws

I'm getting a little confused with applying laws to situations.
For non-profit organisations (charities) that deal with personal information, what law/s are they subject to?
What about retirement homes etc. ?

Do we have to refer to the Amendments?
If a one mark question asks "What law is breached when a mp3 file is shared illegally over the internet?" will I get full marks for stating "Copyright Act 1968", or will I have to include the Copyright Amendment 2000?

Best of luck for tomorrow, everyone!!  :)

Retirement homes I'd be inclined to associate with the Health Records Act 2001.

Anyone with personal information, Privacy Act 1988. Unless it's a Victorian State/Local government agency/contractor, then they're probably fishing for the IPA 2001.

Victorian government related - Information Privacy Act 2001.

If the question said what law was broken, you'd have to quote the section of the act... you're not in law school, the question would be 'What act is this in violation of'. If the person writing the exam has a clue, that is...

The amendments are completely a part of their initial act. It's to my understanding, but don't hold me to this, that they're only likely to ask you about amendments in the context of a multi-choice question. Hence it'd be intuitive anyway.

Woahh hold on, isn't it Information Privacy Act 2000?
It says that in my book..

Hehe sorry, I just made that question up :)
And what do you mean quote the section of the act? I don't think we learned about the different sections.. could you provide an example?

As I said, you're not in law school. You only need to know the act. You do not need to know any more.

Neither of your answers are related to the IPA 2000. I don't see how, anyway.

All you need to know:
Health Records Act 2001 - health stuff, dur.
IPA 2000 - Victorian state and local governments, their agencies and contractors (people working for them)
Privacy Act 1988 - Anything regarding privacy, private or public sectors, nationally.
Copyright Act 1968 - Anything to do with copyright. Unless it seams as if they want to know (up to you to decide), I wouldn't quote the amendment as I cannot remember them years for those! And I do not wish to lose marks for having the wrong year, though I do doubt they're that pedantic.

they are that pedantic. my teacher marks the exam and he says wrong year = no mark, no year = no mark.
have to have the correct year.

I was referring to the wrong year of the amendment. Hence I don't mention the amendment, unless absolutely necessary.

What about the Privacy Amendment Act (Private Sector) 2000?
