Hey guys,
Can someone explain how a SINGLE SLIT interference pattern forms? i'd expect to see a bright central maxima in the middle which then fades off... but this is wrong.

Similar to double-slit inteference pattern. It's just that the central band is much wider, as well as much brighter. And the side bands are less intense than they would be in double-slit pattern.

And why is this the case? How does interference occur?

No inteference. Just diffraction.

And lol ^ good question, I haven't thought about that actually

Multiple photons in the same band of light exhibiting wave-like behaviour by interfering with each other. . .
IF they ask a question about this, you'll have to mention (deBroglie's?) experiment where an electron was fired at the slit at a rate of one electron a second, and a diffraction pattern was still seen a few months later. . .
