Unit 1 of English Language isn't very necessary for Units 3/4, however having some background knowledge of it can assist in the understanding of things such as accents and prosodics of different language variations. Unit 2 I don't even know what I did (development of baby language? and some history)

I know some people who decided to pick up Language at the start of year 12, and they are probably even level with everyone else, if not slightly better :).

It's really up to you. Do you like mainstream? If not what specifically don't you like? Because there are essays in English Language (Unit 3 SACs should be essays). However I do find that it is quite easy to grasp concepts in English Language if you pay attention in class and constantly ask questions.

It wouldn't be easy, english language is one of those subjects where its probably a pretty good idea to have the 1/2.

It's nothing like mainstream english, at all.

Some stuff from 1/2 is totally irrelevant, like the history of language.

Some of it is rather important though, like the subsystems of language.

If you have a good teacher they should go over this briefly next year and you should be able to learn pretty well from that.

It isnt a huge massive roadblock but it still is one.

Try ask an english language teacher at your school for their opinion

I think it is do-able though in my opinion

Haha, there are tonnes of metalanguage (terms) required in english language (100-150ish?). But yea I think a science student may have a tighter grasp on EL than English.

It is definately possible to do EL 3/4 without the 1/2, I did and got 28 SS and I was getting like C/D in normal english and changed and got like A's all the time- just don't stuff the exam up at the end of the year, it will drag your marks down a lot- well it did for me. My only suggestion is to go over the 1/2 course briefly over the summer months, I think it helps a bit especially the subsystems of language and all the metalanguage

If you're picking up 3+4 without 1+2, get a revision pack from your teacher. It should cover the important things, such as metalanguage, subsystems, IPA for discussing accents, etc.

I'd disagree that Unit 1 is unrelated - it's the most related of the two units, as it covers a fair amount of new terms that you'll need to use comfortably in Units 3/4.  Unit 2 is not as related to Unit 3/4 as Unit 1 is, but it is a good basis for Unit 3 - you study language death, which leads very well into a sociolinguistic discussion of what it means to lose a language. This links well into language according to use (U3 AOS 1), as you begin to pull apart how language constructs identity.

Good luck!

it's definately alright, i'd just use the summer holidays extremely wisely. the most important thing to prepare is definately metalanguage.

it can be hard to study b/c some textbooks teach it terribly. i have metalanguage notes that i made. my teacher was awesome and i just wrote down what he said, so PM me if you want them.

I didn't do 1/2, and honestly i have no idea about it since i never went over it..

And i did fine, considering my science focus i found the unit 4 course easier than most i encountered.. and the concepts of everything else were not difficult at all. the only problem i had was with essay writing though not sure if doing 1/2 could help much with that. So depending on YOU, you will be completely fine!

I don't think you need 1/2 with it anyway (like pretty much all VCE subjects), i certainty didn't anyway, just go over the subsystems thoroughly at the start of the year as they are super important for everything, and according to my tutor were a topic within the 1/2 course..

I didn't do 1/2, I didn't have a tutor and I still managed :). Learn the metalanguage and start looking out for examples in the media.
