Two exciting new developments.

Now that my exam period has ended I have some time to devote to you guys :)

1) We are implementing a new feature to the site. "Community News". Currently, the news banner part of the site has lain dormant for the past 2+ years. From now on, it's going to be filled with news about you guys! If you've achieved something academically (note: not topping a SAC), e.g. passed grade 8 AMEB (or Lmus etc.) or got a Premier's award or made an Olympiad team, tell us and we'll put your username up in lights with your achievement!

2) We have enough money sitting in the VN kitty to actually do something with it, so I'm announcing the inaugural

VN Community Prize

What is it?

1) Two book vouchers awarded to the top 2 contributors to VN who graduate in 2010 (and then subsequent years after). It's not the top 2 posters! We're looking for quality of post e.g. how helpful, substantive etc. they are. The book vouchers will be to the destination university of the graduate. If they are deferring their studies, they will be purchased the year after. If they are not attending university, the vouchers will be for Borders. You'll also get swanky titles for the prize! If you have more suggestions for stuff we can add to it, that'd be awesome.

The Members' Choice prize will be a $100 voucher decided by all community members. The Staff Choice prize will be a $50 voucher decided by staff members after the Members' Choice prize is held and awarded to a different member. Note, staff members in the graduating class will obviously be excluded from this process.

How will they be awarded?

Members' Choice Prize

There will be two stages, firstly we'll take secret ballot nominations from you as a community. We'll leave an anonymous board up (logging IPs for obvious reasons of abuse). You guys can then use that board to nominate people you feel should win the award, and why you think they deserve it.

From the people you nominate, the staff team (minus the 2010 graduating class) will whittle down the nominations to an appropriate shortlist of a minimum of 5 members and no more than 10 members, and leave it up to you guys to vote it out. To avoid vote-rigging, only people with 50+ posts will be able to participate in the poll.

Staff Choice Prize

After the Members' Choice Prize is awarded, the staff team will revisit the shortlist in the original poll, minus the MCP winner, and pick a member who we valued through the year to receive the prize.

These are small tokens of our appreciation, but we feel you guys should know that we do value the effort you guys put in to make this community great. While we cannot reward all of you, we are able to single out the people who go above and beyond to make VN what it is, and we're proud to do so :)

If you have any more suggestions to help grow the community atmosphere of VN, please use the suggestion board!

Suggestions that would currently be very helpful:

1) Perhaps better names for the prizes?

2) Would anyone be interested in my writing a reference to the effect of "selflessly helping up to thousands of students whilst completing their own VCE" etc. for prize-winners seeking jobs? Do you think people would be interested in this? It's not that I consider myself to be important enough (I really don't) to be a good reference, but I do feel that the endeavour of what some people contribute to this forum would merit real acknowledgment and advantage in a job-selection setting if the employer were able to grasp the magnitude of what some of you guys do here :P

When I applied for my university scholarship last year, I actually mentioned my activity on VN when they asked about community involvement. The interviewers seemed really interested in it and got me to talk more about it. I would imagine employers may be interested in it as well.

To everyone out there, don't think no one cares about your activity on this forum. It does actually reveal traits of your character which employers may be interested in.
