How hard is the extension maths?

Just wondering if anyone has taken an extension study in maths. I've got some questions:
How hard is it?
Is it a lot of content to cover? How many lessons do you have a week?
Is it hard to get above 80% in the exam?
Is it easy to fail?
Does it work well with specialist in year 12?
Also, with the scoring of the exam, is it like VCE (ranking) or do you just have to get 80% of a paper to get a certain score?
Do you have to be a maths prodigy, like winning all those maths competitions (AMC, Maths Challenge, Uni maths comp etc.) to be able to get 5.5?
Basically, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT?

Any thoughts would be great!!

I myself didn't get to do it but I can speak about my friend who did it many years back. He's a well above average maths student (who just completed his engineering degree with honours). Back in VCE he got a 46 in Methods, a 36 in Spesh and the 5.5 in uni maths.

From what I hear, a lot of people find uni maths easier than Specialist maths. However Melbourne Uni and Monash have different types of uni maths programs, however you should be able to do well with them if you're a capable student in maths

~2 hours every week isn't as time-consuming as 5-6 sessions scattered throughout week. The homework load is usually also a lot less than a normal subject, and the exams are less stressful.

Plus, I think spares throughout your school day are a really great chance to study or kick back. I reckon having spares during school hours is far more valuable than after hours.

I'd say it's not as hard as you think.

Personally, I did Monash extension maths and it was relatively straight forward. The concepts are, of course, much deeper than that of VCE maths. But they are easily understood after some explanation and a little time for you to mull it over.

As for time commitment, there was a single two hour lecture per week, though I believe that does depend where you do it. And most students actually did very little outside of the lecture. On a bad week I may have spent an hour doing questions.

There are three assignments per semester and these should take only a few hours to complete... Then there are two exams - one for each unit.

I can't speak for Melbourne uni maths, but I daresay those who understand Spesh to a resonable standard will have little trouble with MUEP maths.

UMEP Maths is freaking hard, it was my hardest subject this year =/ If it was scored in the same way as a normal VCE subject, it would be my lowest score.

I did one lesson a week, but it depends on where you do it. In any case, it's hard to keep up to date with the concepts. They are so unfamiliar and tricky =( but the exam questions are mostly easy standard textbook questions

Doesn't work well with Spesh at all haha, I found very little overlap between Spesh and UMEP Maths. Like difference between Chem and Physics, slight overlap at certain points but very distinct concepts.

No you don't need to be a maths prodigy to get 5.5. I basically gave up trying to keep up in Term 3 and thereby focus solely on VCE. Then I crammed for about 8 days (3-4 hours a day) before the exams, and ended up barely getting 5.5 (84)

I would recommend going to what is closest/more convenient. Remember that until you get your license (which may not be till uni), you'll be stuck on travelling on public transport to get to where you need to (unless your parents are really nice)

I had friends achieving high 30's in Year 11 and completing uni maths in Year 12, they ended up with 5.5!

kyzoo, you exaggerate. We had it so much easier than the scotch class for example. I think it depends a little on where you do it, cos mggs was awesome for the notes and revision lectures, without them i would've only just passed. Personally i just did the exercises our teacher set for the first half of the ever... then i kinda just stopped working altogether for umep maths and just crammed the entire course in the last week like kyzoo- not fun at all and i do not recommend it at all.

I belive that if you put 1.5 hours aside for umep per week and then study your ass off once your vce exam are over, you should be fine. Umep maths has some srsly abstract concepts, especially in teh latter part of the year, but again with some consistent work you should be fine.

As kyzoo said the concepts do not relate at all.... except for maybe complex numbers but that's about it. Having said that, it does inderectley help with spech in that it make your brain think at a higher lever, basically making spech look much easier and more manageable.

The amount of content is not particularly intense, but again the difficulty is making sure you understand the fundamental concepts. While being a maths genius may help, it's not so difficult to the point that anyone that can get 42+ in methods will be lost.

While not all of the concepts were interesting the first half of the year had some really cool maths in it and i would DEFS recommend you do uni maths. Oh and as a plus you get to meet lots of new ppl :) (i met my girlfriend at uni maths :P )

pm me if you have any other question about the course/topics :)

from what i hear talking to my friends that do muep the general consensus seems to be that umep is more challenging than muep

EDIT: umep= melbourne uni, muep=monash uni
