I think Melb gives more pref to SEAS people than Monash. That's just based on who I've seen get in at both unis below the clearly in with only under rep school SEAS.

I'd agree with this. My ATAR was 97.15 and I applied for SEAS under two categories (rural background and financial disadvantage, which are two of the heftier ones in terms of university leniency as far as I can see) and didn't get a first round for Arts/Law. My friend got an ATAR of 97.85, applied for the same SEAS categories as me as well as the troubled family situation one (or whatever it is) and didn't get an offer for Law/Arts OR Law/Commerce (which he was only 0.4 off). It might make a difference in some of the degrees with a lower ATAR requirement, but I think for the big ones - Law and Med - SEAS makes little to no difference at all.

Just spoke to the people at Monash; they said that they take into consideration any SEAS circumstances, but don't explicitly take ATAR points from the course requirement or add ATAR points to a student's score.
