I really want to learn Japanese for some reason that I can't explain but I've never learnt it before.

You honestly have no idea?

I brainwashed you with subliminal messages about the awesomeness of Japanese... see?

Oh, and yeah... it's true... Japanese doesn't have compulsory culture units, unlike every other language taught at Monash (afaik).

It sounds weird yeah?? I just don't know why I am so fixed on learning Japanese.....

you know the other day I felt as if I was being brainwashed so that must be it...lol

If I pick Indonesian it clashes with politics in semester 1. When I type in the Indonesian unit (Indonesian 3) into MUTTS it has an option with DE. Is that distance education?? Can I select it and do I need to get approval before I can do it??

Thanks

I've never tried doing a unit via distance education, so I've no idea how to answer your question... sorry... these links look like a good place to start though:

(I'm assuming you can access ask.monash at this point... let me know if you can't.)

I presume you have pretty much zero free electives, so the only option would be to attempt to do a Dip. Lang.

EDIT: If your degree is managed by the faculty of Commerce, they will most likely not allow you to start a Dip. Lang in first year.

you can do a diploma of language which adds one year onto your degree.

you might also be allowed to take a few electives from another faculty within your degree but I don't know anything about that...

I'm 99% certain you won't be able to do electives from other faculties with your course - it's just too hardcore especially with Engineering. Most double degrees pretty much do not have electives at all - and the ones that do would have at max like 2.
