Maths Tutor
« on: February 13, 2011, 05:01:28 pm »
Hi, my name is Joyce Cheng, and I just completed VCE at the Mac.Robertson Girls' High School.

I am tutoring maths for year 11 and 12 students. I am mainly offering to tutor Maths Methods and Specialist Maths, but I am happy to tutor Further Maths too.

I am very passionate about maths, and I have a great understanding about the fundamentals of maths. I believe that excellent results in VCE is a combination of a very in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts (often ignored when teachers focus on teaching and drilling in techniques) as well as the technical doing of maths.

I can also provide brief histories of different areas of maths, especially the reasons and influences that led to the development (or inventions) of different subjects. Although students are not required to know of them, they often provide greater understanding. In turn, it becomes easier to apply technical algorithms, and students generally gain greater satisfaction from doing maths.

About me:
- Maths Methods (2009) - 42
- Specialist Maths (2010) - 41
- University Enhancement - First class honours - 5.5
- Attended the National Maths Summer School (held in the ANU every year) in 2010, and invited to return for a second year
- Outstanding results from various maths competitions
     - BHP/Melbourne University Maths Competition (merit)
     - AMC (Prize)
     - MIT Challenge (by Melbourne University) (2nd Place)
     - School Maths Olympiad (3rd Place)
- accepted into Bachelor of Science in Melbourne University, and I plan to major in Maths (pure or applied)

I am happy to offer help on Physics, year 11 Chemistry, and University Enchancement maths for my students too.

I will be charging $25/hour, and I can tutor at all monash library branches (except wheelers hill), and in the city. Please feel free to PM me for any further questions.

An outstanding mathematician, Joyce here is a star at anything maths and also a wonderful friend who listens and talks you through the difficult problems you will surely encounter (she certainly did for me in uni maths). You can't go wrong with having her as a tutor. Much endorsed. =]

Joyce seriously knows her stuff, she Defs was a Factor that allowed me to do so well ^in Umep Maths as she was one of the few on our class that understood what was going on and was always happy to help others out when they didn't understand a concept, I know that at least 70% of my notes were scammed off her during the they many times I zoned out. Endorsed!

I have the pleasure of knowing Joyce in real life, and she is a very friendly, easy to approach and generally awesome person to be around, which are qualities much admired in a tutor. For a tutor to be effective, they must have a passion for the subject they are teaching, and Joyce certainly has a strong passion for maths! She regularly participates in maths competitions and activities in her own time (that's right! without being asked or anything... such enthusiasm for maths right here!), all of which she has achieved amazing results. I've also seen her read maths books for fun... highlighting her love for maths.

I have shared maths classes with Joyce for 2 years, and she was always helpful whenever I needed her advice with a tricky concept/problem.

Joyce is a highly responsible and reliable person, and with her mathematical expertise, I'm sure you won't regret picking Joyce as your maths tutor!

ENDORSED!!!!! :D

Joyce is awesome and can explain everything in a easy to understand way. When I first met her she told me "I love maths" which sort of freaked me out and i thought she was bit of a nerd ..... But it's true. She will make a great tutor! Endorsed!

Joyce has been been an awesome friend throughout the year =) She has a undeniable passion for all things Mathematics (much more so than me). She is a very helpful person who was always the first person I would call for Uni Maths help; she achieved a score of 93 for UMEP Maths which is an outstanding result ^_^ She was ever so patient and willing to help me out with my numerous enquiries. As a person she is easy to talk to and will pay you her full attention.
