On enrolment day it was suggested that we read the first 2 chapters of laying down the law prior to our first lecture. However, legibook website says its only open during term. A dilemma ensues.
1) Is it really necessary to read it before the lecture? I heard the beginning of ILR is pretty much legal studies 3/4 (of which i am quite confident of my knowledge.)
2) Is there another way to get the book?

1) Probably not. The first few lectures will be running through all that 'background of our legal system' content anyway. If you did legal studies last year then you can probably get away with just skim reading the book whenever you have time. The only thing you really need to read for in the first few weeks is the test which and is more like a pop quiz...

2) Avoid legibook as much as possible. The best place to buy textbooks is to get them second hand off Monash Marketplace (Go the the mymonash portal and on the left hand side there is a link to the Monash Marketplace).

On the topic of books, I recommend you only buy Laying down the law and the Interpretation of Legislation Act (you'll need it from week 6 onwards). I never once opened the legal dictionary and 'Mastering Law Studies' is only good for the sample exam answers which are hardly worth $50 - just use the library copies for those.

1) Knowledge-wise no. But it might help with getting into the rhythm of things - learning to do all your required pre-reading so you don't fall (too much) behind. I didn't do legal studies but I have friends who did and they mentioned probably only the first week was in any way relevant to the stuff we did.

2) You can have mine if you want :P otherwise, try www.textbookexchange.com.au

edit: wtf we never even had the option to buy a legal dictionary (not that I would have but still). You have all these resources at your disposal as a Monash student, so save your money cos you're gonna need it for the next 4-6 years

It might have been different when I did it but the first 4-5 weeks of ILR were almost entirely a revision of legal studies.

Agreed. Really, I didn't even find purchase of the textbook strictly necessary.

from experience, i only needed to know what civil n common law were like :P it's a fun read, but not entirely necessary coz majority of ur "testable" stuff will be from lecture attendances (i stress ATTENDANCE. don't make my mistake in sem 1 :P)

2) legibook should be open throughout, not just during semester. very deceiving :@
but yea, avoid legibook. it's cheaper than rrp, but still very expensive. *personal experience talking T_T* use marketplace & the student co-op thingo @ campus centre :D

if you did legal studies, the multi choice test is a breeze (20%)
The exam is all statutory interpretation, so go to class from like Week 8 onwards!
2008: methods: 37
2009: english: 50, legal: 45, chem: 40, eco: 37, spec: 32
ENTER: 98.70
2010: biomed/law @ monash
