VCE Attendance
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:01:12 pm »

I am aware that schools set the attendance requirements. My school is 90% for all classes to obtain a S mark. I have been notified today that I'm at 82% for Psychology. If i did have under 90% at the end of semester my coordinator said that she would have to put N for that class and said i would have to appeal to VCAA. My question is, would VCAA give me a pass if i did get under and would they take my SAC scores.. This has got me worried.. :(

a non-pessimistic way of looking at it would be receiving a warning and your file would be "flagged" but if you keep continuing on this behaviour.. then it's N for sure but.. talk to your VCE coordinator, they know everything. good luck..

You should be fine. As long as you aren't consistently failing SACs I don't see any reason why they'd be tremendously harsh to you, considering you're only 8% off the pass mark. I can't even see any school forcing you to appeal to the VCAA.

It's actually 80%, a lot of schools set it to 90% so that students don't go anywhere near that 80% threshold.

If I'm wrong someone correct me

Taigz is correct. My school did the same thing.
To get satisfactory attendance in a subject you must attend atleast 80% of classes.
in saying that , i attended to 70% of maths methods classes.
so it also depends on your teacher ... obviously if your topping your cohort or close to it , your teachers will love you and be more lenient towards you missing classes.
if your at the lower end , you will most likely receive a fail. = sad truth

Vcaa only know your attendance as your teachers tell them .... hahaha

Does anyone else think this rule is stupid? We're at an age where we don't have to attend school... but if we choose too, we have to be there all the time or they fail us?

Couldn't agree more here :)

Especially when you take into consideration the fact that more often than not there's a more effective way of studying you could be utilizing instead of sitting in class, which, as it was for me today, a waste of time (Year12 English class, we sat around drawing picture of what we think the characters in Cosi would look like)

For the VCAA, the percentage attendance is irrelevant - the VCAA states that you must have 50 hours of face-to-face teaching time for the unit.

However, this is not the minimum attendance for your school.  Each school is entitled to set the minimum attendance rate for students, and this will be upheld by the VCAA as long as it is above 50 hours.

References:

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/schooladmin/handbook/2011/AdminHand2011-PartC.pdf
- "The N result should be used for students who only partly complete work or whose attendance records breach school
rules."

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vcaa/schooladmin/handbook/2009/partB09.pdf
- "All VCE units require 50 hours of class time. A student needs to attend suffi cient class time to complete work. The school
sets minimum class time and attendance rules. Where a student has completed work but there has been a substantive
breach of attendance rules and the school therefore wishes to assign N to the unit, the school must assign N for one or
more outcomes and thus the unit."

The key here is that legally AND ethically, the school must assign you an N for the unit if you have substantially breached school rules in regards to attendance.

I'll be honest - if I were you I'd make sure not to miss a single class for the rest of the Unit, or be prepared to accept an N.  You've already reached what I would consider a "substantial" amount of missed classes beyond the 10% accepted by your school, so you're working on their good will at the moment.  Unless you have recourse to file for Special Provision, don't miss any more classes!

Hope that helps (and hope it doesn't offend, just making sure you know where you stand).

That makes it alot clearer, thank you. I have missed two doubles and two single periods. So six total periods out of 85, i think. So the reason the attendance is so low currently, is because it has not counted the classes to come. Out of 85 is also a worst case scenario, as i factored in two weeks of lost classes for mid year exams. Furthermore i have a medical certificate for one of the missed double periods. Which should not count toward my missed classes. However i forgot to give it in 5 days following the absence and now it will not be accepted. So i were to fail, i think the school would have to be very harsh in order to do that.
